In Saxony-Anhalt, several road construction companies are suspected of having taken part in anti-competitive practices. Reports from star reveal that these companies divided contracts between themselves. These machinations could have caused immense financial damage to the country, which is why claims for damages amounting to millions of euros are now being examined.
The Stendal district has already made specific demands on two of the companies affected. According to a response from the state government to a request from Green Party politician Olaf Meister, the Saxony-Anhalt state road construction authority is also taking action and examining possible claims for damages. The exact amount of these claims cannot yet be quantified, but the state has awarded a total of 15 contracts with three companies with a total value of around four million euros.
Hidden agreements uncovered
In May, the Federal Cartel Office imposed heavy fines of 10.5 million euros on seven road repair companies. They had negotiated orders with each other over a long period of time and agreed who would receive which orders. Before the tenders, clear agreements were made in order to pass the orders to each other.
Olaf Meister is now calling for a careful examination of the chances of success of claims for damages: “We have to look closely at the individual cases in order to assess the chances of a lawsuit,” said the Green politician. This means that the industry is facing a huge challenge because the public pressure is considerable.
The concrete business remains strong
The price range for precast concrete varies depending on the grade: Fc. 200 costs around 2100 pesos per cubic meter, while structurally usable Fc. 250 is 2200 pesos per cubic meter. The company also offers special conditions for architects for large orders, which gives them an advantage in the market.
While legal clarifications are pending in Saxony-Anhalt, the concrete business in other regions continues to develop splendidly. The road construction companies, on the other hand, have to face their legal fate and hope for possible rehabilitation.
