Peer Learning: Success in Stendal threatens to fail!
A remarkable project for the integration of migrants is being carried out in Stendal. The “Café Merhaba” and the associated concept of “peer learning” have achieved a lot, but unfortunately they are now facing challenges. As the MDR reports, the committed Lenski initiated the “Peer Learning” project in front of the café to make it easier for migrants to learn German and integrate into society.
What does “peer learning” mean? Simply put, it means “learning from a comrade.” Through the exchange and support of people with similar migration backgrounds, the inhibition threshold to ask questions is lowered. This is particularly important in everyday situations such as going to the doctor or shopping at the supermarket. The need for support is great because many newcomers have difficulty finding their place in German society.
The meaning of “Café Merhaba”
The “Café Merhaba” not only functioned as a meeting place, but also as a place of learning and support. Unfortunately, the federal and state funding subsidies expired and the successful continuation of the program could not be ensured. Although the project provided a lot of positive momentum, the extension was not approved.
In these difficult times, a look at this could... AWESOME Concept that is rooted in various pedagogical traditions can help. It highlights the importance of situated learning, where learning processes take place in a community of practice. In these communities, people learn and work together, which represents a co-creative approach to promoting language and integration.
A common goal
In the spirit of cooperative learning, it is important that every person in the group contributes to solving tasks and takes responsibility. This way, all members can benefit from each other and celebrate successes together. Narrative methods used in these programs support participants in their personal development and help them overcome challenges.
The EU has not ignored this area either. The has been supporting since 2016 EU Commission Member States to integrate migrants into education systems. The Integration and Inclusion Action Plan 2021-2027 aims to promote inclusive educational opportunities, from early childhood care to higher education. Linguistic and cultural diversity are central topics that are also discussed in peer learning events.
However, the question remains: what happens next? The need for support and innovative offers for migrants remains high. While models such as the “Café Merhaba” and the “Peer Learning” project have taken big steps in the right direction, the continuation of such projects is essential to ensure continued integration and language support. This is the only way we can create an atmosphere together that enables new paths in life and celebrates the diversity of our society.
