Fire devils rage in the Wittenberg district: fires and accidents shake the region

On June 28, 2025, the Wittenberg district was hit by a series of fires that caused great excitement. How n-tv reported, several incidents occurred within a few hours that kept the fire brigade on their toes.

The first fire broke out in Zahna, on Am Ratsteich Street, at 2:38 p.m. Around 100 square meters of wasteland burned there and set the roof of an adjacent building on fire. The estimated damage is around 50,000 euros. Just half an hour later, at 3:17 p.m., there was another fire on the B182 near Dorna, where around 15 meters of wasteland went up in flames and three trees were damaged. 100 meters of wasteland also burned on the B182 near Rackith. All fires were extinguished by the fire department.

The danger of forest fires is increasing

The situation worsened on Sunday night when another fire broke out at 12:53 a.m. on the L129 near Klitzschena, affecting around 15 square meters of wasteland. There are currently no indications of the causes of the fire, but the authorities have declared the highest forest fire danger level. This means that walkers and hikers in the forest are no longer allowed to leave the paths in order to minimize the risk of further fires. A decision that cannot be taken for granted like that Federal Environment Agency can be determined.

Since 2018 and 2019, the number of forest fires in Germany has increased again due to extreme weather conditions and drought. The north-eastern federal states in particular are often affected by large-scale fires. Studies show that the danger of fires has increased in recent years due to global warming.

Traffic accident with several people injured

But it wasn't just the fires that caused a stir. On the same day, at 6:25 p.m., a traffic accident occurred in the Wittenberg district of Abtsdorf, which also required a full house of emergency services. A 40-year-old driver of an Opel collided in the intersection with a VW driven by a 34-year-old man. The VW skidded and hit a tree. A total of eight people were injured, including five occupants of the Opel between the ages of 11 and 44 and three occupants of the VW between the ages of 3 and 37. The injured were taken to various hospitals for treatment. A police vehicle was on site and the road had to be closed for an hour. The total damage is estimated at around 50,000 euros.

We are therefore faced with a number of challenges that not only require careful fire prevention, but also measures to increase road safety. In view of these incidents, it is absolutely necessary to revisit the topic of forest fires and road safety. Stay vigilant and pay attention to the authorities' advice in such critical times!
