New professor of traumatology: Mendel fights against pelvic fractures!

Groundbreaking developments in traumatology – Prof. Dr. Thomas Mendel takes over the professorship at MLU

On November 1, 2025, the experienced orthopedist and trauma surgeon Prof. Dr. Thomas Mendel can take up his new position as W2 professor for traumatology of the truncal skeleton at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU). Mendel, who previously worked as deputy chief physician in the Clinic for Accident and Reconstructive Surgery at the BG Klinikum Bergmannstrost Halle, brings a wealth of experience and a keen eye for the needs of older patients. His particular focus is on the treatment of fractures of the truncal skeleton, which include the pelvis, acetabulum and spine.

“A very current challenge,” says Mendel, “is the sharply increased proportion of pelvic fractures in older people.” His goal is to develop innovative care strategies that enable seniors to maintain their mobility. A key to this are minimally invasive surgical techniques, which are intended to enable immediate postoperative full weight bearing in order to successfully avoid so-called bed rest.

Research and practical application

Mendel not only studied medicine at MLU and received his doctorate in 2002, but also gained a wide range of experience in various clinics at the Halle University Hospital and the BG Klinikum Halle. From 2009 to 2025 he worked as senior physician and deputy chief physician, and in 2014 he completed his habilitation in orthopedics and trauma surgery at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. Prof. Dr. In this context, Heike Kielstein, the dean of MLU, particularly emphasizes Mendel's clinical expertise, which will further strengthen the cooperation between the university medical center and the BG Klinikum Bergmannstrost Halle.

“The needs of older patients are often specific and require a good hand,” emphasizes Mendel, adding that not everyone is suitable for major operations. This sensitive approach could be the key to sustainably improving care in old age.

A look into the future

With the appointment of Prof. Dr. Mendel to the MLU opens up new perspectives in the traumatology of the trunk skeleton. Not only will the scientist contribute his clinical skills, but he also aims to raise awareness and targeted research to improve the situation of older people with bone fractures.

And while such advances are being made in the medical world, digital transformation accompanies us with innovations such as the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, which optimizes working with applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint with AI-powered functions. This app was recently introduced and integrates various Microsoft programs to increase productivity not only in the office but also in everyday life. Such technologies, which facilitate access to information, are invaluable in all professional areas.

It remains to be seen how developments in medicine and the digital world will work together to improve the quality of life of our seniors. A good deal that key players like Prof. Dr. Thomas Mendel and technologies like Microsoft 365 connect!
