Vodafone is introducing HD conversion for ZDF channels in November!
In today's fast-paced media world, Vodafone has decided to revamp its TV offerings. On November 18, 2025, the company, the largest cable network operator in Germany with over 8 million TV customers, will broadcast five ZDF channels exclusively in HD quality. These include ZDF, ZDFneo, ZDFinfo, 3sat and KiKA. This change takes place at the same time as the SD switch-off of the ZDF channels via satellite, as Vodafone reports.
The trend is clear: almost all of Vodafone's cable TV customers now use HD-capable devices. Only 2% of cable customers still rely on SD-only receivers. Since the beginning of 2025, the ARD programs, the first and all third programs, have only been available in HD. This development is also reflected in the continuous improvement of TV quality in German households. However, for customers who are still using a receiver from Kabel Deutschland or Unitymedia that is over 12 years old, it is time for an update.
What does the change mean for viewers?
From October 7, 2025, Vodafone will display ticker tapes on the affected channels to inform customers. As a rule, viewers with HD-capable reception devices should not have to take any action. However, for those who still have older devices, it is recommended to invest in an HD receiver. Network operator Vodafone recommends using receivers with a Scart connection to ensure smooth use. The prices for new HD receivers are around 30 to 50 euros.
Another reason for switching to HD is to improve the cable network infrastructure. The change will free up valuable frequencies that can also be used for better broadband offerings. Ultimately, this not only benefits television customers, but also Internet users, who can benefit from higher data rates. In addition, the NorDig LCN standard is introduced, which enables automatic channel detection and storage.
The future television landscape
The development continues: From 2025, public television broadcasters will stop broadcasting in standard quality. The switch to antenna television (DVB-T2 HD) took place in 2017. For many households, a simple channel search is sufficient as long as the televisions are not older than 10 to 12 years, as many modern models already have an integrated HD receiver. However, if you still use a tube television, you can still operate it as long as the receiver has a Scart connection.
In order to stay up to date in the future, it is advisable to check your own devices and possibly invest in new technology. The next stage of the media revolution is upon us, and with the right precautions, viewers will be well-equipped to fully enjoy the new HD offerings.
