Wittenberg shines again: Silver for natural green space maintenance!
The city of Wittenberg can once again look forward to a remarkable award. How mz.de reports, Wittenberg was certified for its exemplary use of green spaces and received the “Natural City Green” label. This makes the city one of the pioneers in the area of natural green space maintenance.
The recertification took place recently, and the city didn't miss a beat. Wittenberg first received its original award in 2019. This year, the Alliance of Municipalities for Ecological Diversity found significant improvements in five categories, which led to an increase in its rating.
Excellent commitment in numerous areas
Wittenberg can be particularly proud of the progress in lawn and meadow care as well as in gardening, which has now been raised to the “silver” level. The city has even reached the gold level in other disciplines such as participation and cooperation, public relations and communication as well as land-use planning. This demonstrates the comprehensive commitment and good cooperation that Wittenberg shows in the area of urban culture close to nature.
The award was presented at a ceremony in Kronberg im Taunus at the end of October. Here, cities like Wittenberg show that environmentally conscious urban development is not only possible, but also a sign of social change.
A look into the future
According to a report by KombiBio A total of 70 cities and municipalities took part in this label process. It is considered a benchmark for sustainable green space management, which should become the standard in all municipalities in the future. The trends speak for themselves: More and more cities are relying on species-rich green spaces and flowering meadows to create a healthy, sustainable environment for their citizens.
The alliance that awards the award wants to promote biological diversity and make a contribution to natural urban development. Other municipalities have already applied for certification again or are working on improvement measures to reach the next level.
Overall, it is clear that Wittenberg is setting an important example for sustainable green space management not only in the region, but also nationally. The city thus remains a role model in environmentally friendly urban design and shows that a good hand in maintaining green spaces benefits both nature and residents.
