The railway landscape in Saxony is facing a decisive change: the Upper Lusatia-Lower Silesia Transport Association (VON) will merge with the Saxon Central Service Company (ZDG). This decision took place in mid-June 2025 at a meeting of around 70 participants in the community of Weisswasser. The aim of the merger is not only to improve the service, but also to use existing resources more efficiently. LR Online reports that the merger is primarily intended to strengthen the rail infrastructure and promote cooperation between the companies involved.
The state of affairs and next steps were discussed in detail during the meeting. Such a large project requires numerous precautions, so the responsibility for implementation lies with a newly founded project group. This initiative aims to better link regional transport offerings and make travel easier. The member communities actively participate in this process in order to incorporate their immediate needs into the planning.
Subscription models and consumer rights
Things are also getting exciting in the area of subscriptions, especially with trial offers that are increasingly being offered on the Internet. Consumers can often test services free of charge for a certain period of time. After this test phase has expired, the subscription will be subject to a charge unless it is canceled or revoked beforehand. This also applies to educational providers such as Sofatutor. An important ruling by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) on withdrawal rights in such cases was made on October 5, 2023. The ECJ ruled that consumers only have the right to cancel once for a subscription that is initially free and automatically renewed.
However, if users have not been sufficiently informed that costs will be incurred after the test phase, they have a new right of withdrawal. Such regulations are necessary to ensure that consumers are protected and can enter into such contracts well informed.
