New construction of the commercial kitchen in Bautzen: 18 million for modern supplies!

The Bautzen correctional facility is currently on everyone's lips: things are making strong progress on the construction site of the new commercial kitchen, which involves an investment volume of around 18 million euros. The first construction phases have already been largely completed. As the Saxon reports, the new kitchen will offer space for up to 325 prisoners and staff in the future. An important innovation in modern day-to-day prison life, the old system will soon be a thing of the past.

The project broke ground a year ago and a lot has happened since then. The building is currently being prepared for the final touches - the building shell is almost completely closed and the installation of the pipes and technical systems is 90% on schedule. There is a lot of activity here around the clock: up to 760 meals a day are to be prepared in the new commercial kitchen!

New challenges due to increasing numbers in preventive detention

But it's not just the construction work that's making headlines. In Saxony, the number of criminals in preventive detention has increased in recent years. Loud The Saxons There are currently 38 people housed in the Bautzen Correctional Facility. These prisoners have already served their prison sentences and have been convicted primarily of serious offenses such as sexual crimes, murder or manslaughter. In the context of previous years, this represents an increase: in February 2019, 33 people were still in preventive detention, while 36 were already registered in 2020.

Preventive detention, which is not legally a punishment in Saxony, is rather a measure for the betterment and protection of the general public. This is regularly checked by the courts, says the NRW judiciary, to ensure that the danger to the people being accommodated remains as low as possible. The goal is not only to secure dangerous perpetrators, but also to provide them with intensive treatment options to promote their recovery.

Planned expansions and structural changes

Another sign of the growing need: an expansion for preventive detention is already planned in the Saxon budget. A new wing for additional accommodation is to be added to House 2. Construction is scheduled to begin in fall 2026 and the work is expected to take three years. There will continue to be a lot of movement in Bautzen in the future - both on the construction site of the new kitchen and with regard to preventive detention.

With this comprehensive renovation and realignment, the Bautzen Correctional Facility will not only meet the needs of the prisoners, but will also ensure the safety of the general population. A strong sign in uncertain times!
