Senior woman attacked by fraudster – son saves with clever plan!
In the Bautzen district, a suspected attempted fraud caused a stir with shock calls. On September 4, 2025, a 90-year-old senior citizen in Jeßnitz received a call that made her blood run cold. The supposed lawyer on the other end of the line claimed that the elderly woman's daughter was involved in a fatal traffic accident and urgently needed money in the form of a high bail amount. In a clever move, the senior woman's son, 61, answered the phone, feigned consent and secretly informed the police. This sent an important signal against fraud, as the Sächsische reported.
The son's plan was not without risk, but was ultimately successful. A 41-year-old suspect was caught during a fictitious handover of cash and golden coins in Bautzen. As a result of his actions, he has been in custody since September 5th. This shows how quickly scammers act and how important it is to be vigilant. According to the MDR, the senior citizen would hardly have been able to transfer money if her son had not reacted.
How do shock calls work?
Shock calls are nasty scams in which callers pretend to be relatives or police officers to put pressure on unsuspecting people. An alleged accident or serious crime is often brought into play for which money is needed immediately. This scam has become widespread in recent years, and older people in particular often fall for it, as the information from Polizei-Beratungsdienst shows.
The fraudsters have a good hand when it comes to building up pressure. They say that only cash can help a relative receive immediate treatment or that valuables have to be handed over for security reasons. The uncertainty among the victims is correspondingly high, which forces them to make quick decisions.
Protective measures for seniors
To protect yourself from such fraudulent activities, the police recommend some preventative measures:
- Bei Unsicherheiten direkt die Nummer 110 wählen und nicht die Rückruftaste nutzen.
- Auflegen, wenn der Anrufer Druck ausübt.
- Vertraute Personen unter bekannten Nummern kontaktieren.
- Keine persönlichen oder finanziellen Informationen am Telefon preisgeben.
- Wertsachen niemals an unbekannte Personen übergeben.
- Eine Vertrauensperson hinzuziehen oder schnell die Polizei informieren.
- Behandlungszahlungen für Unfallopfer sind niemals erforderlich.
The events in Bautzen once again illustrate how important it is to remain vigilant against such attempted fraud. Thanks to the attentive son, something worse was prevented and the suspected fraudster is behind bars. It is up to everyone to educate their own family and friends and thus put a stop to further fraud attempts.
