Danger of forest fires in the Bautzen district: heat and drought alert!

The risk of forest fires has increased significantly in the Bautzen district due to the ongoing drought and high temperatures. Temperatures of up to 35 degrees are expected in the coming days, while in some regions of the district there will be more than 100 liters of precipitation missing compared to the long-term average Sächsische.de reported. Sabine Rötschke from the Bautzen district office warns of an acute fire risk, especially in the northern areas around Hoyerswerda and Weißkollm, where danger level 4 (high danger) has been reached. Despite previous streaks of luck without major forest fires, there is acute vigilance.

In order to respond to the impending danger, the automatic early forest fire detection system (AWFS) was strengthened. The new camera in Lauta enables comprehensive real-time monitoring of the forests. The district administration warns forest owners to strictly avoid open fires and to mix their stocks with hardwood to reduce the risk. In addition, emergency vehicles should always be able to find an intact route to the affected areas. The obvious strong recommendation for citizens is to only enter forests when necessary and to pay particular attention to cigarette butts, which are often the main cause of forest fires.

Danger of forest fires throughout Germany

However, the danger situation is not only limited to Bautzen. The whole of Germany faces an increasing risk of forest fires in the coming months, which will last until October. A systematic look at the numbers shows that wildfire numbers have risen sharply in recent years, with records set in 2022 when there were 2,397 fires. This is the highest number in 30 years. A decrease to 1,059 fires is expected for 2023, but this is still above the annual average ZDF.de reported.

The threat is compounded by factors such as summer heat, prolonged drought and human error such as arson or negligence. Dense stands of coniferous wood in regions such as Bavaria and Brandenburg are particularly vulnerable. These soils have often suffered large losses of land in the past, with Brandenburg leading the way last year with more than 765 hectares of forest area burned.

Preventive measures and outlook

In terms of preventative measures, mixed crops with a high proportion of hardwood are a good strategy to reduce the risk of forest fires. In addition, targeted forest fire barriers and protective strips that act as fire breaks are recommended. The message is clear: even small inattention can have devastating consequences. The last few heat-resistant years, particularly 2022, highlight the need for changes in the management of our forests to ensure their longevity and stability, as well Federal Environment Agency clarified.

The wildfire season has actually expanded due to changing climatic conditions, and the risk is expected to continue to increase over the next few decades. Younger, sparse coniferous forests are particularly vulnerable, and therefore increased protection and preventive measures are of utmost importance in order to raise awareness of this issue among future generations.
