Chemnitz 2025: Departure to become a cultural capital with unique diversity!
Chemnitz, the third largest city in Saxony, is on the threshold of becoming the European Capital of Culture 2025 with great anticipation and plenty of activity. The city, known for its architectural treasures and vibrant art scene, is referred to as the “Saxon Bayreuth” because Richard Wagner's sister lived here.
A highlight of the Capital of Culture idea is the Kaßberg, which is considered one of the largest contiguous Art Nouveau and Wilhelminian style districts in Europe. In the middle of the outstanding buildings are the imposing Villa Ash, the Schocken department store and the Red Tower, the city's oldest building from the 12th century. Especially the art collections like that Gunzenhauser Museum with its 3,000 works, make Chemnitz a cultural center that is known nationwide.
Art and culture as a motor for change

The Capital of Culture year will also be enriched by the exciting Hartmannfabrik project, which is currently being converted into an information center. Architecture and urban development in the spotlight
A very special event will be the European architectural competition for students, which will take place on September 27, 2025. The motto “Chemnitz inside: upgrade + connect” highlights the Viktualienmarkt behind the Karl Marx Monument and should promote the networking of the inner city districts. The submitted works will be evaluated by a top-class jury, which also includes experts from architecture and urban planning, such as the Chamber of Architects of Saxony. The 38 submitted works not only include innovative ideas for urban design, but also contributions that are intended to strengthen the dialogue between citizens and the city.
The Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 promises an exciting year full of art, architecture and community. With a wide range of events, a lively independent scene and historical sights, the city will be the stage for many great cultural highlights that are sure to attract many visitors.
