Chemnitz 2025: Costumes, culture and creative insights in the M26!
Chemnitz is all about culture – and not just for the locals! On July 2, 2025, an exciting event will take place at M26, Maximilianstrasse 26, which will be all about the Capital of Culture. Ulf Kallscheidt, program manager for “Chemnitz 2025,” and Dagmar Ruscheinskey, the city’s mayor, will be guests. Wolfgang Dersch, the city's cultural advisor, will moderate the evening. The topic: “Capital of Culture – what is, what remains, what can become?” A captivating conversation about the upcoming developments and opportunities in the region.
Particularly attractive for visitors is the free entry to the event, which is part of the preparations for the European Capital of Culture 2025. Chemnitz has joined forces with 38 partner municipalities from Central Saxony, the Erzgebirge and the Zwickauer Land to create this great event together. The motto “C the Unseen” aims to make the previously unseen and undiscovered visible.
Regional roots and cultural heritage
The cultural landscape of Chemnitz is rich and complex. The Erzgebirge/Krušnohorí mining region has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019, and the region has an important history of industrialization, which has contributed to the flourishing of art and culture. The city, known for its industrial history - particularly in the textile, mechanical engineering, railway and automotive sectors - has a lot to offer with diverse architecture and top-class museums. All of this is happening against the background of Chemnitz becoming the European Capital of Culture in 2025, and thus an important focus is being placed on the connections between history and the present.
The planned events begin on January 18, 2025 and include festivals, exhibitions, theater performances, performances, culinary experiences and workshops. Both local actors and international artists are involved in the event to create a colorful program that promotes experiences and encounters.
A look into the future
A central location will be the newly renovated Hartmann factory, which will function as an international meeting point after its renovation. This development reflects the changes that the city has experienced over the course of its eventful history. Chemnitz offers an exciting mix of industrial culture, Eastern modernity and many creative spaces that are also attractive for subcultures.
The new cultural orientation, coupled with the commitment of the city administration and citizens, gives hope that Chemnitz is not only worthy of the Capital of Culture, but will also flourish as a place for encounters and creative development in the entire European context. Ulf Kallscheidt's keynote speech will certainly be the first step into an exciting future in which the focus is on the undiscovered and unseen.
