Chemnitz celebrates: First roof festival Colorful Roofs” on August 23rd!
On August 23, 2025, Chemnitz will be the venue for the first roof festival, which will make the hearts of visitors beat faster under the name “Bunte Dächer”. The city of Chemnitz, which together with Nova Gorica was named European Capital of Culture 2025, invites you to experience the city from above. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., guests have the opportunity to enjoy the captivating views from 17 rooftops and viewing points. A real highlight will be the official opening at 12 p.m. on the roof terrace of the student residence at Brühl 65, to which media representatives are cordially invited. As the city of Chemnitz announces in its press release, most of the roofs are accessible all day, although some can only be experienced as part of guided tours that can be booked via the Chemnitz 2025 - Colorful Roofs platform.
The festival is part of an extensive program for the cultural development of the city, which was created as part of the “European Creative Rooftop Network” project. In this context, Chemnitz was supported by the EU's creative program. The festival's goals include opening up new perspectives on the city and creatively discussing the use of roof spaces. Visitors can not only discover the heights of the city, but also enjoy art and culture at unusual heights. An example of this is the green roof of the Schocken department store, where bees are even kept under the motto “C the Unseen”.
Diverse programs and activities
On this day, the Wirkbau event venue will be transformed into a lively place with an open roof garden open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. From 4 p.m. the Atomino will provide musical highlights with “Sommergarten: Studio Sessions”. Tours of the tower also take place at fixed times, although advance booking is recommended. The Chemnitz “Eins” youth hostel ensures physical well-being by selling food and drinks and offering a concert with the Serbian band Sonas at 3 p.m.
Yoga fans will find another highlight of the festival at the Marathon Tower, where energizing morning yoga sessions take place at 10 a.m., followed by a relaxing yin yoga class at 5 p.m. Registration is required here. The TAG24 office will also be the venue for the festival, where DJ sets from local artists will ensure an upbeat atmosphere from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Garage Campus also offers lectures on creative roof use, where international speakers share their insights and experiences. These include, among other things, the lectures “How does a green roof work?” and numerous interesting keynote speeches on innovative uses for roof surfaces. Workshops and participation are also part of the program.
Chemnitz as European Capital of Culture
August 23rd is just the start of the Capital of Culture year, which began with a celebratory start on January 18th, 2025. The City of Culture award not only brought the city the honor, but also financial support of 1.5 million euros through the Melina Mercouri Prize. Chemnitz relies on collaborative cultural projects that strengthen civil society and build a network of European democracy builders. These initiatives are not only intended to set short-term highlights, but are also of great importance for the long-term development of the city and its region, as shown on the website EU data platform is to be read.
The “Bunte Dächer” roof festival promises to be an exciting and colorful event for all age groups - a must for anyone who wants to experience the city of Chemnitz from a new perspective. So stay tuned and choose your favorite rooftops to admire the city from above!
