Chemnitz mayor Schulze on a trip to Asia: discover opportunities for Saxony!
Mayor Sven Schulze from Chemnitz is heading to Asia! From September 29th to October 5th, he will represent the Saxon municipalities in a high-profile delegation that will accompany Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer on his trip to Taiwan, Japan and Singapore. This trip is all about intensifying contacts with partners in Asia as well as expanding networks and opening up new cooperation opportunities in business and research. The aim is to position Chemnitz as an important player in the international arena, especially in the booming semiconductor industry.
The first stop takes the mayor directly to Taiwan, where he will introduce the city's interests in the network between Saxony and Taiwan. Here he meets, among others, Dr. Eva Langerbeck, the Chief Representative & Executive Director of the Foreign Chamber of Commerce (AHK) Taiwan. In addition to the bilateral talks, [=> Oiger.de also reports that](https://oiger.de/2025/09/10/sachsen-wollen-taiwans-zentrer-partner-in-deutschland- Werden/195196) Saxony is to be established as a “Taiwan hub” for microelectronics. Economics Minister Dirk Panter has also announced that Saxon companies that are already operating in Taiwan or are planning to do so should receive appropriate support.
Important collaborations in the semiconductor industry
Chemnitz is home to the European Test and Reliability Center (ETRC) of Fraunhofer ENAS, which plays a key role in the development of semiconductor technologies. This research facility will be expanded into a strategic core partner in Singapore during the delegation trip. The signed cooperation agreement with the A*STAR Institute of Microelectronics (IME) aims to develop new technologies for electromobility and innovative sensor applications.
In addition, the strategic cooperation will also include material and process innovations and develop methods based on artificial intelligence. This means Chemnitz is positioned even better in the international competitive environment and can assert itself in one of the most dynamic innovation areas in Asia.
But the commitment of the Saxon delegation will not only be evident in Taiwan. In Japan, Schulze has planned a meeting with Jiro Kogi, Deputy Secretary General of the EU-Japan Festival. A special highlight will be the presentation of an invitation to the opening of the “Theaters of the World”, which is addressed to Makoto Takashima, Chairman of the Operating Committee of EU-Japan Fest.
Semiconductor industry as a future factor
There is a particular focus on the semiconductor industry because, as the Federal Ministry of Economics reports, these technologies are the engine of digital and green transformation. The demand for semiconductors is experiencing an enormous upswing, especially in the areas of automobile manufacturing, mechanical engineering and medical technology. In fact, it is estimated that by 2030 the demand for chips in the industrial sector in Europe could even double.
In order to meet this explosive demand, Saxony is required to strengthen its position as a central player in the semiconductor market. Here too, it is clear that geopolitical tensions and international trade conditions play a role. Mayor Schulze's trip will not only explore the opportunities for Chemnitz and Saxony, but will also help set new standards in international cooperation.
So the coming days will be exciting; It remains to be seen what new partnerships and projects will emerge from this trip to Asia.
