Ceremonial inauguration: New cycle path bridge over Kalkstrasse!

A new chapter for cycling will soon begin in Chemnitz: the ceremonial commissioning of the cycle path bridge over Kalkstraße is coming up. TOI Toi Toi! On October 15th at 10 a.m., all interested citizens are invited to a bike tour with State Minister Regina Kraushaar and Mayor Thomas Kütter. The destination: the elegant new bridge, which will be officially inaugurated at 10:15 a.m. The starting point is the valley bridge on Limbacher Straße, where the renatured Pleißenbach flows ( Chemnitz.de ).

The bridge is not only a pretty structure, but also closes an important gap in the cycle path network between construction sections 2.1 and 3. It enables a level-free crossing over the motorway slip road to the BAB 72 and thus ensures greater safety and comfort for cyclists. The structure weighs an impressive 284 tons and consists of 840 square meters of carbon concrete. This brings the dream of a continuous cycle path a big step closer ( Media service Saxony ).

Financial support for cycling

The construction of the bridge is also a pleasing financial success. With a contract volume of around 8 million euros, around 90% of which is funded by the federal and state governments, the project has already made positive waves. It was determined that over 5.6 million euros from the federal government would flow into the construction of the bridge in order to promote the section between Hohenstein-Ernstthal (Wüstenbrand) and the Küchwald in Chemnitz. The mayor of construction, Michael Stötzer, expressly thanks the support of the Free State, which made the construction of these construction phases possible ( Media service Saxony ).

The ministry sees ${cycling as the key to achieving the federal government's climate goals. The long-term funding of cycling projects is intended to ensure stability and progress in the coming years. Programs such as the “Special City and Country Program”, which runs until 2030, show the commitment to sustainable mobility solutions ( BMV ).

A look into the future

The entire Küchwald-Wüstenbrand premium cycle path has a total length of 13.6 kilometers. An already completed section stretches from Riedstrasse to Paul-Jäkel-Strasse and is 5.2 kilometers long. The planned extension of 2.4 kilometers from Riedstraße to Röhrsdorfer Straße in Grüna is due this month, which will certainly give cyclists an additional incentive. Important steps that will further promote bicycle mobility in the region ( Media service Saxony ).

However, the completion of further sections has not yet been set in terms of dates or finances. The bridge itself, with a length of 183.3 meters, offers a usable width of 4 meters. With the connecting dams of 50.4 and 28.8 meters, a well-thought-out concept for cycling was implemented here - true to the motto: "There's something there!"

So we can't wait to see what the coming weeks will bring and look forward to a cycling community that will be connected to each other through these new paths! Let's get ready for the big day!
