Bernsdorf outdoor pool shines after renovation: A jump into the cool water!

On Friday, June 27, 2025, the outdoor swimming pool in Bernsdorf near Chemnitz was reopened with much joy and positive voices. The new building is part of a comprehensive pool complex, which also includes a modern swimming pool. A third of the enormous renovation costs of 7.66 million euros were borne by the federal and state governments. This shows how important it is to maintain such leisure facilities that represent the health and well-being of the citizenry. Sports mayor Dagmar Ruscheinsky (independent) expressed her delight at the progress and successful reopening of the pool, which has a long tradition: It was first opened in 1925.

The renovation began in 2020 and a lot has happened since then. Before the reopening in September 2022, the indoor swimming pool had already been successfully completed. The outdoor pool itself now offers a competitive 50-meter pool, a fun pool with a water mushroom and slides. A new building houses modern changing areas and sanitary rooms and ensures more comfort for bathers.

A look at the innovations

Before the final work was completed, the previous 100-meter pool was converted into two pools. Currently, around half of the spacious lawn is usable, which offers space for around 1,000 visitors at the same time. The plan is to complete the remaining outdoor part by the end of July 2025, which will help celebrate the 100th anniversary of the bathing complex. BSW city councilor Ralf Becker, himself a former lifeguard, was present at the opening and was the first city councilor to swim in the new stainless steel pool.

The official opening hours of the outdoor pool are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily from now until August 10th. After August 11th, the times will be reduced to 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Visitors can look forward to a wide range of leisure activities in a modernized environment.

The overall impression of the swimming complex

The population is also thrilled by the new swimming pool, which was ceremoniously opened on World Children's Day. It impresses with a 25-meter pool, spacious changing rooms, a teaching pool as well as a children's paddling pool and diving facilities. The entire swimming complex, a project by the Dresden architectural firm Code Unique Architekten GmbH and Storch Landschaftsarchitektur, was built over a period of eight years, which was not without problems due to the corona-related delays and challenges in the construction industry. A total of 37 companies and ten planning offices were involved in the construction.

In addition, the technical area of the new hall offers the most modern equipment with large tanks for the pools and a photovoltaic system on the roof. An additional multi-purpose pool with slide and wave pool will also be part of the offer as the outdoor area is completed. The total cost of this comprehensive project is around 25 million euros, which represents a major benefit for the region.

The opening of the outdoor pool and the completion of the indoor swimming pool are a clear step towards better leisure activities for the region's citizens and show that Bernsdorf is exemplary in its commitment to the future of swimming sports facilities. These investments in infrastructure bode well for anyone who enjoys swimming or just wants to relax by the water.
