Cyber attack on Saxony-Anhalt: Pro-Russian hackers paralyze portals!
On Thursday morning, Saxony-Anhalt felt the power of cybercrime: several ministry websites were temporarily unavailable. The reason was a massive cyber attack carried out by the pro-Russian hacker group “NoName057(16)”. Loud RND it was a DDoS attack in which servers were overloaded with a flood of requests. Fortunately, the affected pages were quickly restored, although there were minor limitations, particularly on the press release page, which was the central target of the attack.
Behind the attacks is the increase in activity by NoName057(16), which has intensified its DDoS attacks against German organizations in recent weeks. This group apparently also has prominent targets in Germany in its sights, including large companies such as Bayerische Landesbank or BayWa AG and even several cities such as Cologne and Düsseldorf. Their attacks appear to be not just annoying disruptions, but possibly politically motivated reactions to current geopolitical developments, such as Chancellor Friedrich Merz's plans to send Taurus cruiser missiles to Ukraine Daily Security Review reported.

But what about general cybersecurity in Germany? The report of the BSI on the state of IT security shows that there are worrying trends: cybercriminals have become more professional and are using modern technologies to carry out their attacks. The number of high-volume DDoS attacks increased in the first half of 2024, and it is not without reason that critical vulnerabilities discovered in systems such as firewalls or VPNs continue to be highlighted.
The state government of Saxony-Anhalt began using new technologies to detect and defend against such attacks as early as 2024. Secure defense measures have been activated and geo-blocking is being considered to exclude the areas from which the attacks come. A complaint against the attackers is also being discussed in order to send a message.
In this tense situation, it remains to be seen how effective the measures to strengthen cyber resilience will be. Collaboration between manufacturers, operators and consumers is crucial to effectively counter the threat of cybercrime. Digitalization increases the attack surfaces and creates new challenges. It is clear: there is still a lot of work ahead of us!
