Dresden's new parking fees: residents now pay twice as much!
Dresden will drastically increase the fees for resident parking permits from July 2023. Find out more about the new tariffs and their background.

Dresden's new parking fees: residents now pay twice as much!
In Dresden, parking will be really expensive for residents from July 1, 2023. The city has now more than doubled the fees for resident parking permits. The price for a resident parking permit with a validity of six months increases from 20 euros to just under 50 euros. The fees for longer terms have also increased significantly: an annual ID card now costs 75 euros instead of 30 euros, and if you want to pay two years in advance, you have to pay 135 euros instead of the previous 50 euros. The new tariffs cannot be overlooked and will probably heat up the tempers of the approximately 10,000 people affected, because the debate about the price increase has been simmering for years. The changes apply to all applications received by the city after the deadline Sächsische.de reported.
The increase in fees does not occur in a vacuum. In 2020, the Bundestag and Bundesrat abolished the nationwide upper limit for resident parking permits of 30.70 euros per year. Since then, the federal states have been able to decide for themselves how much citizens have to pay for such ID cards. The fact is: the fees are often based on the administrative effort - and this has increased noticeably in recent years. T online shows that the fees vary greatly in many cities in Germany. For example, in Tübingen you pay 120 euros per year and in Freiburg even 200 euros per year for a resident parking permit. In European cities like Stockholm the price even shoots up to 827 euros annually.
The context of the increases
But why are prices rising so rapidly? One reason is the limited parking space in many urban areas, which makes parking increasingly difficult for residents. At the same time, municipalities are struggling with increased administrative burdens. Although the resident parking permit exempts visitors from the maximum parking time and fees, there is still no entitlement to a specific parking space ADAC reported. In addition, parking spaces are often limited in time in most areas, with a maximum of 50 percent of parking spaces being reserved for residents during the day.
In other cities, such as Bonn, residents even have to pay up to 360 euros for a parking permit. This means that Dresden joins a number of cities that have significantly increased the fees for resident parking permits. The regulations are different in the different federal states. In Bavaria, Saxony-Anhalt and Schleswig-Holstein, however, there are no increases, where the price remains below 30 euros. However, the problems surrounding parking are similar everywhere - the problems resulting from a lack of parking spaces are increasing and the topic has become increasingly relevant in recent years.
A look into the future
Since the fees are expected to continue to rise in the coming years, residents in Dresden can expect unpleasant developments. The changes in the fee structure could be difficult for many to digest, as they place additional burdens on the cost of living. A good hand when it comes to parking skills is becoming increasingly important, and the competition for the few parking spaces is getting tougher. Despite all the challenges, it should be noted that further adjustments are to be expected in the coming years, which could make parking even more expensive for citizens in Germany.
