Dresden Eislöwen lose against Ingolstadt in a thrilling DEL home debut!
The Dresden Ice Lions started the new DEL season with a bitter setback. In the first home game, which took place in the sold-out Joynext Arena - more than 4,400 enthusiastic fans were there - the team had to admit defeat to ERC Ingolstadt 2-4. [Image] reports that right at the start of the game an emotional banner was pulled under the roof of the hall celebrating the DEL2 championship.
Captain Travis Turnbull caused cheers among the supporters when he scored the first DEL home goal for the Ice Lions in the power play in the 9th minute. But the previous season's preliminary round winners, Ingolstadt, were not bothered by the deficit for long: Kevin Smallwood and Philipp Krauß led the team back into the game and equalized shortly after Turnbull's goal. To the delight of the Ice Lion drivers, it remained a 1-1 draw after the first third.
In the middle section the tension only increased. The Ice Lions were challenged and had to overcome being outnumbered. Despite two consecutive penalties, coach Niklas Sundblad's boys were able to save the tie until the final third. [Eishockey.net] highlights that Ingolstadt's Trevor Parkes was unable to take advantage of a penalty from close range, which saved the newly formed Ice Lions from falling behind for the time being.
In the third third it went back and forth. Emil Johansson, who also emphasized the Ice Lions' positive development, brought his team back into the game in the 52nd minute by equalizing the score to 2-2. This was only a brief joy, because just a few seconds later Edwin Tropmann made it 3-2 for Ingolstadt. Shortly before the end, Alex Breton made the final score 4-2 with an empty net goal and secured the points for the guests.
Captain Turnbull and striker Niklas Postel were disappointed but confident after the game. Postel noted that the Ice Lions “have to get into the league and score points.” The next game is already scheduled: On Thursday the team from Dresden will face the Löwen Frankfurt - a new chance to get their first points this season.
Head coach Sundblad was proud of the atmosphere and the good mood in the team, despite the defeat. “We played against two strong teams and will learn our lessons from them,” he emphasized. The Ice Lions now have to do everything they can to prepare for the upcoming games and celebrate their first victory.
