Bicycle demonstration in Dresden: demonstrate safety with a pool noodle!

Cycling through the city on a bike? This will become a common cause in Dresden on June 20th, when the ADFC district group Löbtau invites you to the bicycle demonstration “With the pool noodle to the bathroom, simply by bike”. From 4:30 p.m. the means of transport start from Bonhoefferplatz towards Hebbelbad. The aim of the campaign is to give cyclists more safety on Dresden's streets, especially where there is a lack of cycle paths, reports Weekly Courier.

Especially in times when bicycles are very popular due to their environmentally friendly and healthy properties, the dangers that cyclists are exposed to cannot be overlooked. A common problem is the overtaking distance of drivers being too small, which at only 1.5 meters in urban areas and 2 meters outside of urban areas is far too little - a rule that many drivers do not know or ignore. This problem prompted the state capital to take action and initiated a poster and postcard campaign to urge compliance with this rule. At the suggestion of ADFC For this purpose, 250 large City Light posters were placed throughout the city.

Point out the dangers with pool noodles

Back to the demonstration: To illustrate the overtaking distance of 1.50 meters, all participants will be equipped with pool noodles on their bikes. This will make it clear to everyone how much space a cyclist needs in traffic. “This is a creative way to draw attention to our safety needs,” explains Nils Larsen, board member of ADFC Dresden e.V. He emphasizes the importance of safe cycling and the common goal of improving conditions for cyclists the weekly courier reported.

Another goal of this campaign is to raise awareness of cycling rights. For example, cyclists do not have to use every cycle path, but rather follow so-called blue cycle path signs. This sometimes causes uncertainty, especially among drivers, who often do not know that cyclists are also allowed to ride on the road. This can lead to dangerous situations, especially during overtaking maneuvers, he said ADFC.

Poster campaign as an additional measure

The current poster campaign is a further appeal to improve the relationship between drivers and cyclists. Many drivers are not aware of the distance rule, which leads to dangerous situations. The new billboard conveys that cyclists are balance vehicles and can leave their line of travel in the event of wind or obstacles - which is why distance is so important. This important information should also be passed on in driving schools and through regular checks by the authorities in order to ensure greater safety on the roads.

The demonstrative tour ends with a convivial end at the Hebbelbad. There, participants can exchange experiences from the trip and share their experiences on the road. So if you want to be there, you should come to Bonhoefferplatz on June 20th at 4:30 p.m. With a little fun and a pool noodle in your luggage, the movement for more safety on Dresden's streets can begin!
