Peace prayer in Dresden: Solidarity against violence and incitement!

In recent days, the city of Dresden has paid particular attention to peace and social cohesion in view of growing tensions and violent attacks on migrants. On Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. the congregation of the Church of the Ascension in Dresden-Leuben invites you to a peace prayer. The aim is to promote “peaceful and strong coexistence” and at the same time firmly reject propaganda against migrants. This prayer comes at a time marked by a hasty incident at a tram stop in which two 18-year-olds were injured with beer bottles, which has further inflamed tempers in the city, as MDR reports.

Events took a dramatic turn when two men with Tunisian citizenship were identified as suspects and arrested. Since their arrest, investigators found a music box that belonged to the injured teenagers. An investigation into assault and theft is currently underway. These events come at a time when the right-wing extremist party “Free Saxony” is calling for a demonstration and demanding the repatriation of “criminal migrants”.

Peace prayer and demonstrations

On Monday evening, numerous people took to the streets in Dresden and the surrounding area to take part in the so-called “Monday walks”. In Sebnitz, for example, around 450 demonstrators marched peacefully through the city. This demonstration was organized by the small-town, right-wing extremist party “Free Saxony”. The protesters' demands extend to immediate border protection and an end to the flood of asylum seekers, as Antenne Sachsen reports. At the same time, a peace prayer took place in the Peter Pauls Church in Sebnitz to promote peaceful coexistence. The non-party mayor Ronald Kretzschmar also spoke to the guests there.

The acts of violence that have been increasing recently are not just isolated cases. At the end of July, four masked men were identified who attacked a refugee shelter in Sebnitz. Afghan residents were brutally attacked and a 20-year-old German is suspected. The investigation is ongoing to identify other people involved.

Radicalization and social cohesion

In this context, the increasing radicalization in society cannot be ignored. These phenomena are not new, but they find fertile ground in times of contentious migration debates. As the Federal Agency for Civic Education explains, radical movements such as right-wing extremism and anti-Semitism are social challenges that endanger social cohesion. They manifest themselves in racially motivated attacks on refugees and increasing popularity for right-wing extremist movements.

This radicalization often leads to intolerance and isolation from various groups in society. Since September 11, 2001, migrants in particular have increasingly seen themselves as “foreigners” and experienced discrimination, which promoted tendencies to withdraw and increased acceptance of extremist positions.

The current developments in Dresden are therefore not just a local matter, but reflect a broader phenomenon that affects all of Germany. The call for more civil courage and political education programs that address the causes of radicalization is more urgent than ever. In these troubled times, prayers for peace and dialogue between citizens are crucial to pave the way to a more harmonious coexistence.
