Wolfgang Tillmans: Remscheid artist conquers Paris with a unique exhibition!
The Remscheid artist Wolfgang Tillmans has taken on a very special place in the art scene in 2023. After an impressive series of exhibitions in various cities, his retrospective will now be held in Center Pompidou on display in Paris, as the museum's last major show before a five-year closure. The exhibition bears the evocative title “Rien ne nous y préparait – Tout nous y préparait” (Nothing prepared us for this – Everything prepared us for this) and covers almost forty years of artistic work, including photography, music, video and personal archives.
What is special about this exhibition? The installation takes place in the emptied library of the Center Pompidou and extends over an impressive 6,000 square meters. Here, Tillmans' works are not presented in a classic chronological order, but in a format that makes it difficult for viewers to clearly categorize them. Instead, the show combines moving images, music and texts, supplemented by contributions from performance artists. In his art, Tillmans addresses the paradox of the present, where many crises were foreseeable, but they came as a surprise.
A year full of exhibitions
Before the Paris exhibition, Tillmans went to Dresden, where his works were on display in the Albertinum until June 26, 2023. This “Space” exhibition featured around 200 photographs and video works that reflect his lifelong love of astronomy. He also celebrates significant successes in his hometown of Remscheid: In House Cleff Numerous works by Tillmans can be admired until January 4, 2026, which are presented on 600 square meters. Here the artist also portrayed workers in the tool industry who contributed to the development of the city.
Tillmans, who won the Turner Prize in 2000 and is known for his exceptional style and commitment to contemporary art, has had major retrospectives in recent years at renowned institutions such as Tate Modern in London (2017) and MoMA in New York (2022). The exhibition “Fragile”, which toured through a large number of African cities between 2018 and 2022, was particularly spectacular. Now the art world is eagerly awaiting the next stages of his career.
