Adventure trip through Saxony: nostalgic trip with locomotive 52 8079!
A beautiful autumn day, just the right weather for a nostalgic train ride! On October 25, 2025, this offered Leipzig Railway Museum a very special tour through Saxony. Steam locomotive 52 8079 initially traveled from Leipzig over the Güterring towards Muldental.
The participants could look forward to a journey of around five and a half hours, which led through picturesque landscapes and along the so-called Bankruptcy Mile. Numerous viaducts and impressive views of weirs, floodplains and the magnificent Leisnig Castle awaited you on this route.
An unforgettable experience on rails
The tour started in Leipzig Plagwitz with arrival at 10:28 a.m. The first highlight of the route was crossing the Mulde on the Kössern viaduct, where the historic special train between Großbothen and Tanndorf enchanted the landscape. After an entertaining stay in Döbeln, where a change of direction took place, the journey continued to Chemnitz main station. Here we made another change of direction before heading back to Leipzig.
What was particularly exciting for the travelers was the passage through Geithain station, where a regional train, the RB113, had to stop to give the impressive special train enough space.
A look into the history of railways
Not only the tour itself, but also the background of the railway museum are attractive. Railway museums, like the one in Leipzig, not only preserve historic rail vehicles, but also technical equipment, maps, tickets and even uniforms from bygone times. They play an important role in the history of transport and the preservation of rail transport, which was part of the Industrial Revolution. The Leipzig Railway Museum is no exception and joins a list of important railway museums in Germany, which include, among others, the South German Railway Museum in Heilbronn and the Bavarian Railway Museum in Nuremberg.
The combination of nostalgic travel and an in-depth examination of history makes the offerings of such museums extremely attractive. It is a wonderful opportunity for railway enthusiasts and the curious to immerse themselves in the fascinating world of railways while enjoying the breathtaking Saxon landscape.
After the passengers arrive in Leipzig Plagwitz at around 3:51 p.m. in the afternoon, we can only hope that such events will remain popular in the future. After all, a little nostalgia is good for everyone and brings back memories of unforgettable train journeys.
For everyone who doesn't want to miss the next tour, tickets are available on the website Steam Railway Museum available. With every ticket you not only support a piece of cultural history, but also take a journey through time.
