Görlitz becomes a coastal rudder hotspot: Olympic dreams at Lake Berzdorfer!
Görlitz, Deutschland - It will be exciting in Görlitz! From 2028 the coastal rudder will be Olympic and the city is preparing to get a boost in the truest sense of the word. At the Berzdorfer See, which is considered the ideal place thanks to the west wind and waves, the Görlitz rowers have focused on this exciting sport. The competitions are a real spectacle and captivate rudder and water sports enthusiasts. Each run that lasts under three minutes is decided by a knockout system-a sprint full of adrenaline, in which two rowing pairs have to storm on the boats at the same time, then master a demanding slalom course and soon return to the starting line.
The history of the Görlitz rowing club, which was only founded in 2019, is still young, but the association's commitment is great. In order to further promote the sport, Coastal-Rowing boats have already been purchased. And the costs for this are impressive: around 5,000 euros for a single boat and around 10,000 euros for a double two. A total of around 20 active rowers are currently in the club that also have advertising for new members. If you are interested, you can come to training every Thursday.
a state base in sight
The Görlitz rowers have set themselves an ambitious goal: they want to establish a state base. A rowing house on Lake Berzdorfer is planned, which should offer training rooms, a workshop, an office for coaches and even accommodation. The completion of the base is planned by the end of 2026. This infrastructure is of crucial importance, since half the national team has already trained in Görlitz and prominent athletes such as double Olympic champion Karl Schulze are connected.
Particular attention is paid to the promotion of young talents. Henning Schramm from the Landesruderverband will be increasingly involved in autumn in order to form competitive athletes from the hopeful rowers who may also be able to shine on the Olympic stage. The cooperation with the Federal Rudest Association and the Saxon Association shows that the sport is becoming increasingly important-and not without reason.
Coastal Rowing on the advance
The completely new sport, which will celebrate premiere at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, requires not only physical strength, but also technical skills and a pronounced spatial orientation. The German national team in the coastal rowing has already taken the first steps to optimally prepare. On June 27, 2025, the team was a guest at TSG Researchlab in Zuzenhausen to try out in a sports psychological diagnostics. It was about testing cognitive performance under physical stress-an innovative combination of classic test procedures and virtual reality scenarios. It is impressive how the sport develops, and national coach Adrian Bretting sees promising progress that improve this transition phase for competitive sports.
