New President of the Lions in Görlitz: Focus on education!
A new wind is blowing at the Lions Club Görlitz! Gerhard Schoch, a well-known face in the region, was elected president and will take the helm on July 1, 2025. Over the years, Schoch has distinguished himself as a committed supporter in the community. He has been a member of the Lions Club since 2012 and has served as club master for over a decade and most recently as vice president. His professional career began in 1990 with the founding of his company Gerhard-Schoch-Druckgiesstechnik, which he moved to Görlitz in 2002, where he has lived and worked ever since. His connection to the city is palpable, and now he would like to make a further contribution as president.
For Schoch, education is a central issue, and so he is basing his presidency on the motto “Education: Helping people help themselves.” He was determined to do his part in lifelong learning, which was crucial for him personally. A first highlight of his term of office will be the district meeting of the Lions Clubs from East Germany, which will take place in Görlitz at the end of September. In addition, the Schwimmschaf Cup, a popular event as part of the Görlitz Old Town Festival, will take place. The proceeds from this competition go to a project run by the Christoph Lüders School support association.
Commitment to the community
The Görlitz Lions Club has once again put in a lot of effort this year to support social projects. As part of its commitment, the club will once again award the “Görlitzer Löwenpreis” in 2025, which is open to schools, sports clubs and those committed to child and youth work in Görlitz. Applications are possible until January 31st, and the winners will receive prize money of around 10,000 euros, with a minimum funding of 1,234 euros per project. These funds also come from the aforementioned Swimming Sheep Cup, where participants can “adopt” a swimming sheep for a small donation amount.
The Lions Club is not afraid to be active in other social issues. For example, the Leo Club Görlitz is holding a fundraising campaign at Marktkauf Königshufen on February 8th, where customers can purchase and donate non-perishable food. The entire harvest of donations collected is passed on to the Görlitz soup kitchen to help people in need in the region.
How other Lions clubs are helping
The commitment of the Lions Clubs is not just limited to Görlitz. The Lions Club Landshut also recently took a remarkable step and donated the proceeds of its 2022 Advent calendar campaign amounting to around 30,000 euros to nine non-profit institutions and educational initiatives in the region. Projects included, among other things, the delivery of tablets for a children's home or the support of integration projects in the neighborhood club. Such initiatives show how important it is to support and advance each other as a community.
Gerhard Schoch and the Lions Club Görlitz are not alone; they are part of a larger network that actively supports social issues. Even in times of growing need, it is clear that community projects like this play an essential role in strengthening solidarity and supporting those in need.
It remains to be seen what successes Schönch and his team will achieve during his term in office.
