Teacher shortage in Saxony: Over 40% of educators work part-time!
In Saxony, it is particularly noticeable in the 2023/24 school year that over 40 percent of teachers work part-time. The rate is currently 40.8 percent, which represents a significant increase compared to neighboring federal states. Thuringia has a part-time rate of just 23.0 percent, followed by Saxony-Anhalt with 23.1 percent and Brandenburg, where 29.3 percent of teachers are employed part-time. This provides these numbers LVZ.
The nationwide trend is not much different: the part-time quota for teachers has reached a new high of 43.1 percent. Women clearly have an advantage here, because over 50 percent of female teachers work part-time, while the figure for male colleagues is only 22.6 percent daily news reported. This suggests that school education in Germany depends more on the flexibility of teachers.
High part-time rates in the teaching workforce
Compared to the previous year alone, the part-time rate rose from 42.3 percent to this new record level. The statistics show that more than 25 percent of teachers are now over 50 years old, and even 10 percent are over 60 years old. All of these factors could have a negative impact on the quality of teaching, as older teachers often strive for shorter teaching times.
