Leipzig is fighting to host the Women's European Championship in 2029!

On June 13, 2025, the German Football Association (DFB) specified its ambitions for hosting the 2029 Women's European Championship. Leipzig is one of eight German cities vying for the contract. These also include Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hanover, Cologne, Munich and Wolfsburg. Cities like Berlin, Rostock and Gelsenkirchen, however, are no longer up for election, as sportschau.de reports.

DFB President Bernd Neuendorf is optimistic and believes that Germany can host a major football festival. The remaining venues were chosen well, based on recommendations from a DFB expert panel, according to zdfheute.de. In a further step, the final documents must be submitted to UEFA by August 27, 2025 before the UEFA Executive Committee decides at the end of the year which location will be awarded the contract.

A look into the past

The Women's European Championship has a long history, which began with its first edition in 1984. Germany has already served as host country twice, in 1989 and 2001. In both years the German women were able to successfully win the title. England are currently the reigning European champions after beating Germany 2-1 in a thrilling final in 2022 - giving the upcoming tournament an exciting backstory that many fans are looking forward to.

The next European Women's Championships will take place in Switzerland in 2025. So there is still some time until the big event! Germany, along with Belgium and the Netherlands, lost out to Brazil at the last World Cup for 2027, but hopes for the Women's European Championship remain high. In addition to Germany, Denmark and Sweden as a duo as well as Poland, Portugal and Italy have also submitted their applications for 2029.

Future outlook

The upcoming award decision is eagerly awaited. Fans of the women's national team in particular are excited to see which cities will ultimately become the destination for sports enthusiasts. At the last European Championships, the field of participants had already been expanded to 16 teams, which creates even more excitement and drama. From 2025, qualification will take place in a league system similar to the UEFA Women's Nations League - a sensible change that could further advance women's football.

Whether local stadiums will accept the big show remains to be seen. The football scene in Germany is ready for even more football fever and preparations are in full swing. Wikipedia highlights that the Women's European Championship is one of UEFA's most important competitions for national football teams.

The countdown is on – will Germany really host the next big football festival in 2029? The answer is still pending, but the anticipation is unbroken!
