A tragic work accident shook the construction site in Leipzig-Probstheida on Monday, October 13, 2025. According to reports from MDR A construction worker was hit and trapped by a rail excavator around 12 p.m. Despite rescue measures immediately initiated by the fire brigade and rescue service, the man could only be declared dead at the scene of the accident.
The accident occurred on Prager Straße, near the Leipzig South Cemetery, where work is currently being carried out to renew the street. This measure, which has been running since the end of August 2025, includes the extension of tram tracks, the construction of new stops and the expansion of cycle paths. Due to the accident, all work on the construction site was interrupted Leipziger Volkszeitung reported.
Accident investigations are ongoing
The exact circumstances of the accident are still unclear. The police have started an investigation and commissioned a specialist commission to investigate the events surrounding the fatal incident. In addition, the state management will check compliance with occupational safety regulations at the construction site. The police set up extensive barriers at the scene of the accident so as not to disrupt the investigation.
What is particularly tragic is that colleagues of the construction worker who died in an accident are now being cared for by a crisis intervention team. It is not known who the deceased was as his identity and age have not yet been released.

The event sheds light on the often dangerous working conditions in construction. Statistics of the BAuA show that almost 40 percent of reported fatal workplace accidents occur on construction sites. Between 2014 and 2024, 1,549 fatal work accidents were reported to the BAuA, while the professional associations even recorded 4,458 accidents. These figures highlight the need to rethink working conditions and increase safety standards.
The tragic incident in Leipzig-Probstheida is another wake-up call to take the protection of workers in risk-prone jobs seriously. Construction still has high risk and continuous attention is needed to prevent such tragic accidents.
