Aviation art in Kamenz: SLS makes aircraft an eye-catcher!

In Saxony, the love of aviation and craftsmanship are impressive in a small but fine company: the Sächsische Flugzeug Service GmbH (SLS) at the airfield in Kamenz. This company, which has been in business since 1990, specializes in aircraft painting and is the only company in the area to offer this service MDR reported.

With around 20 employees, SLS paints around 15 aircraft every year. The order books are currently so busy that they will be full by March 2026. Managing director Alexander Schlacht explains that every gram counts when painting: “The layer thickness is crucial.” The example of a Cessna 172, a training aircraft from Bavaria, which is currently being given a new coat of paint in the SLS premises, shows how well business is going.

Specialists in professional painting

But SLS doesn’t just offer painting of complete machines. The company specializes in smaller aircraft and individual parts such as engine cowlings. SLS is often deployed at Leipzig/Halle Airport, where the team demonstrates its capabilities. In addition, SLS does not paint complete wide-body aircraft, but rather offers individual services for aircraft components LRT are described.

A modern website presents creative ideas for special paintwork and shows potential customers the company's wide range of possibilities. For the various painting projects, SLS uses both wet painting processes for a wide variety of materials and a vacuum suction blasting process for sandblasting steel components.

A sophisticated process

The painting process itself is a multifaceted undertaking: First, old paint residues and rust are removed with a brass brush. This is then followed by a primer, which ensures a permanent bond between the substrate and the top coat, partly treated in the drying room at controlled temperatures. After painting and curing, the aircraft are reassembled in the neighboring Scheiling company.

Compliance with the highest quality standards is important to SLS. In October 2018, the company was successfully recertified according to the aviation-specific EN 9100:2018. How BWB explains, SLS relies on thorough cleaning, degreasing and chromating to guarantee perfect protection of the components.

With its sufficiently long runway, the Kamenz airfield can even compete with small jets. This makes SLS’s service offering even more attractive. Every painted aircraft is a piece of pride for the team, which has earned an excellent reputation through high quality and creative paintwork.

With its passionate craftsmanship and reliable service, Sächsische Flugzeug Service GmbH remains a central point of contact for all aviation enthusiasts in the region and beyond.
