100 years young! Edith Junge celebrates an impressive birthday while bowling
On October 25, 2025, the bowling alley in the Großenhainer Schützenhaus was the scene of a very special celebration: Edith Junge celebrated her 100th birthday. The spry woman, who is celebrating her 100th birthday this year, was warmly welcomed by family and friends. Among the numerous guests were her three children: Wolf-Dieter (76), Sigrid (75) and Steffen (69), who celebrated this milestone with her. A true feast for the soul!
The bowling alley, which is almost like a second home for Edith Junge, played a central role in her life. Her son Wolf-Dieter describes her so lovingly, because bowling is a great passion for the senior citizen. She regularly meets with friends to pursue this leisure activity and makes not only sporting but also social contacts.
An active life in old age
Edith Junge is proof that age is no reason to sit back. Sport is very important to her, and so her eldest son takes her to the gym every week. There she masters her exercises independently - from warming up to adjusting the equipment, always with a cheerful smile on her lips. Since 2019, she has supplemented her fitness routine by taking part in the “Fit through exercise while sitting” meeting place. Here she learns a variety of coordination exercises in the group that help her stay active.
The program, which has been offered for twelve years, is aimed specifically at seniors, like Edith Junge, who do not lose the courage to stay active despite health challenges such as hip surgery. Renate Struck, the experienced occupational therapist, leads the group, and the coordination training has now become firmly integrated into the celebrator's everyday life.
With friends
The wonderful celebration of her 100th birthday was not only an opportunity to look back on the last few years, but also to share the present moment with loved ones. Friends, acquaintances and former athletes were there to congratulate Edith and give her an unforgettable day. After all, it is the community that really makes such special occasions come alive.
Edith Junge is not only one of Großenhain's oldest citizens, but also a role model for everyone who wants to stay active as they get older. Their lifestyle shows that fitness and social interaction are essential components of a healthy lifestyle that can also benefit older people.
