DLRG warns: Swimming in the Elbe is so dangerous this summer!

Especially in the summer, when numerous wedding invitations land on the table, it is important to pay attention to safety on the water. The German Life Saving Society (DLRG) warns urgently against swimming in the Elbe. According to a report by Sächsische.de A particularly large number of bathers drown in rivers - a dangerous statistic that no one should ignore.

The DLRG registered a total of 411 fatal accidents in waters in Germany in 2023, an increase of 31 compared to the previous year. This is the third increase in the number of drownings in a row and marks the first return above the 400 victim mark since 2019, according to the DLRG in an analysis on its website dlrg.de determines.

Alarming statistics

The summer months in particular show significant increases. By September 10, 2024, 353 people drowned in German waters. This is 75 more than in the same period last year. In August 2024, a month with frequently high temperatures, the DLRG recorded 80 drowning cases, 33 more than in August 2023. Rivers and streams are particularly affected, where 134 people lost their lives. A worrying trend that should not be surprising given the high temperatures and the resulting increased physical strain.

The DLRG is not only calling for more awareness among the population, but also for parents of small children to be particularly careful. President Ute Vogt has emphasized that informed visitors to bodies of water are important in order to minimize the number of tragic incidents.

Water rescue and safety

The DLRG, as the largest voluntary water rescue organization in the world with over 600,000 members, plays a central role in water safety. Around 6,000 volunteer lifeguards are on duty on the coasts between May and September, while around 49,000 volunteers ensure safety at lakes and swimming pools on weekends. These dedicated helpers are essential to contain the dangers of water and to initiate rescue measures in emergencies.

The DLRG strongly recommends only swimming at guarded swimming areas in order to minimize the risk of an accident. Finally, 77% of swimming deaths are men, and 60% of the victims were over 50 years old. A high proportion of drownings also occurred during water sports activities. These numbers are intended to strongly encourage people to use water responsibly and always pay attention to their own abilities and limits.

In the midst of these tragic developments, the region also discusses joyful occasions, such as weddings in the beautifully situated Fasanenschlösschen, which is considered the smallest royal castle in Saxony. Sven Geisler provides exciting information that creates a romantic setting for many couples in the area.

Health risks caused by the humid weather must be taken seriously. The balance between leisure activities on the water and the associated risks should also be on the agenda. The DLRG and the city are called upon to raise awareness of these issues.

The mayoral candidate Markus Renner is not only fighting against the water and wedding risks, but also against technical difficulties, such as his stolen website, while he can enjoy an agreement with the FDP candidate Martin Bahrmann.

In times like these, it is of utmost importance to be aware of the dangers and always strive for safety while enjoying summer life to the fullest.
