The first inclusive football tournament in Freiberg inspires everyone!
The first inclusive football tournament for special schools with a focus on intellectual development recently took place in Freiberg. The Ernst-Grube-Halle was the venue where schools from the region came together for a sporting competition for the first time. The event was organized by the Central Saxony District Sports Association and Chemnitzer FC and aimed to promote inclusion and sporting activity for children with special needs. A complete success, as confirmed by the numerous participants and spectators. View reports that the special schools from Freiberg, Meißen, Freital, Flöha, Frankenberg and Limbach-Oberfrohna competed with a lot of enthusiasm.
In the exciting finale, the “Albert Schweitzer Freiberg” special school met the Meißen special school. After a thrilling game, Freiberg had to admit defeat 3:4, which meant that the challenge cup went to the Meißen special school. KSB managing director Benjamin Kahlert took over the management of the tournament, while Katrin Rudolph, the head of the Albert Schweitzer special school, emphasized the great importance of this event for the children. Prominent guests such as Chris Löwe, sports director of Chemnitzer FC, and ex-player Robert Zickert supported the event and created additional enthusiasm. The mascots Malik from Chemnitzer FC and Fredi Wolf from the district sports association were also there.
Football and its power of inclusion
Inclusion in football is not a new topic, as shown by the Football Inclusion Days in Cologne, which took place on Roncalliplatz between 2022 and 2024. Under the motto “With football in the middle of society”, footballers with and without disabilities from all over Germany competed. The aim was to demonstrate the diversity of handicap football and strengthen social cohesion. The next edition of these football inclusion days will take place in 2025 on the main market in Nuremberg, where a varied program with tournaments for athletes with intellectual disabilities and inclusion teams is expected. The DFB Foundations We also offer inclusion training and networking events to show those responsible how to actively live inclusion.
Particularly noteworthy is the matchday of the Blind Football Bundesliga, which is considered the highlight of the event. FC St. Pauli secured the championship in this league last year and all activities are accessible to spectators free of charge.
The presence of prominent personalities from sport, politics and society is intended to help develop a more inclusive culture and support the social integration of people with disabilities. Supporters such as Deutsche Telekom, VW and SAP show that inclusion is also very popular there.
The inclusive football tournament for special schools in Freiberg is an important example of how sport can build bridges and actively promote an inclusive society. As the games took place on the pitch, the value of togetherness and community became clear to the audience. A nice day for everyone involved!
