Free travel on the B 169: Zeithainer road construction now completed!
The traffic jams of the last few months will soon be a thing of the past: From September 17, 2025, drivers will be able to use the B 169 federal highway west of Zeithain again without any hindrance. The State Office for Road Construction and Transport has completed the road renewal work that began on March 18 this year. The section from the “Lichtenseer Straße” roundabout to the traffic lights at the intersection of B 169/Moritzer Str./Promnitzer Straße in Röderau was extensively repaired. The construction project cost around 2.7 million euros and was fully financed by the Federal Republic of Germany. According to diesachsen.de, a smooth flow of traffic through the previously closed area is expected from the afternoon hours on Wednesday.
But this is not the only construction site currently underway in Saxony. The comprehensive renovation of the B 169, which stretches from Ostrau to the district border of Northern Saxony, was completed in October 2024. This section covers around 9.2 kilometers and was necessary to bring the road infrastructure into shape. The total costs of this renovation measure amounted to around 7.7 million euros, also financed from the federal budget. As lasuv.sachsen.de reports, the construction work not only included the renewal of the asphalt coating, but also the replacement of the asphalt base layer in larger areas.
In particular, traffic signs and signposting were also renewed. A big thank you goes to road users, residents and businesses for their understanding during the necessary diversions.
Investments in infrastructure
If we look beyond these current construction projects, a look at the German transport infrastructure as a whole shows that the federal government wants to invest a total of 166 billion euros by 2029. The focus is primarily on the renovation of dilapidated railway lines and motorway bridges. Almost 107 billion euros, as reported by tagesschau.de, are to flow into rail. A further 52 billion euros are planned for federal roads. Compared to the years 2020 to 2024, transport investments are expected to increase by around 60 percent. These funds have a new special fund for infrastructure and climate protection, which could contain up to 500 billion euros.
The railway also plans to convert around 100 stations into “train stations of the future” and not only modernize the design, but also improve train information and general accessibility. General renovations of heavily used railway lines are also on the agenda to promote punctuality and reliability in the long term. Investments are being made everywhere to ensure that the transport infrastructure in Germany is future-proof.
