Großenhain relies on sun: new photovoltaic system is being built!

A new solar field will be built in Großenhain, which is important for both the local energy supply and sustainability. Sachsen Energie has announced the construction of this open-field photovoltaic system south of Nasseböhla, along the Großenhain-Elsterwerda railway line. This reports Sächsische.de.

The project will initially be implemented on an agricultural area. The first construction phase covers an area of around 15 hectares in the Walda district and includes the construction of four transformer stations. After this part has been completed, the second construction phase will begin, which covers seven hectares further north with a further three transformer stations.

Capacity of the solar modules

A total of up to 38,928 solar modules with an impressive total output of 23 megawatts are to be installed on the system. In addition, an additional 15,384 modules with an output of 9.23 megawatts will be available. This means that Großenhain could take a big step towards renewable energies and position itself well in the competition for sustainable energy supply.

An additional plus point for the project is the already clarified fire-fighting water supply, which represents an important safety criterion. Furthermore, a permanent maintenance path will be created, which will also serve as a construction road and crane parking space. This is intended to ensure smooth maintenance of the system. Other relevant reports indicate that there is strong support for this type of infrastructure in the region. Energy Saxony offers interested citizens an overview map of the EEG area background “disadvantaged areas of Saxony” in order to find out about possible funding.

Resistance to wind energy

While the plans for the solar field are moving forward with broad approval from the city council, there is less positive news in the area of wind energy. The majority of the Großenhain city council rejected the application to build a wind farm, in which six wind turbines with a height of over 261 meters were planned. There were already concerns in the summer, which have now culminated in a clear rejection. The rough dimensions of the wind turbines contrast with the smaller, more flexible solar solutions that are now to be used in Großenhain.

However, these developments are more than just a local matter: they reflect a trend in how Saxon regions are trying to make their energy supply more sustainable. The opening of agricultural land in disadvantaged areas to EEG funding is becoming increasingly relevant. This is also done by Luis Saxony impressively documented, which describes in detail the regulations for the use of open spaces for solar projects.

Overall, it can be said that with this project the region is not only taking a step towards green energy, but is also pursuing innovative approaches to energy production and supply. So the future looks promising!
