Meißner Cathedral celebrates with Daniela Kuge: Donations for a new organ are urgently needed!
Last Saturday a very special celebration took place in the impressive Meißen Cathedral: CDU state parliament member Daniela Kuge celebrated her 50th birthday. The celebrations, which formally took place on her actual birthday on June 29th under the motto “Celebrations in the Cathedral”, impressed with the majestic backdrop of the cathedral, which is not only known for its architectural beauty, but is also considered a central place in Meißen’s history. Die Sachsen reports that Kuge expressed her gratitude for this historic place during the celebrations.
Among the numerous guests were high-ranking politicians such as Interior Minister Armin Schuster, Education Minister Conrad Clemens and CDU parliamentary group leader Cristian Hartmann. Such events underline the political community's connection to the region's cultural heritage.
Meissen Cathedral: A cultural jewel with challenges
Meissen Cathedral is not only an impressive sight, but also attracts over 105,000 visitors every year. The centuries-old church is dedicated to Saints John and Donatus of Arezzo and is considered one of the purest German-Gothic cathedrals in Germany. It is an important part of the Burgberg ensemble, which also includes the Albrechtsburg and the Bishop's Castle. Wikipedia highlights that the cathedral is the first Christian nucleus of today's Saxony, founded by King Otto I in 968.
However, the cathedral also faces challenges. A central point is the urgently needed renovation of the organ. During concerts, the organ sounds quiet and distorted from row five onwards. Experts estimate that the cost of the new organ will be around three million euros, with the Free State and the federal government covering a large part of the costs. Kuge is supporting the initiative to preserve the acoustic conditions and preserve the cultural significance of the cathedral through a fundraising campaign.
Current information shows that 23,500 euros have already been collected for the new organ. The organizers hope for numerous additional donations to successfully complete the project. Anyone interested can find everything about sponsorship and the appeal for donations on the cathedral website.
An award-winning place for families
The Meissen Cathedral is in focus not only because of its historical significance, but also because of its family-friendly offerings. According to the Wochenkurier, the cathedral was awarded the “familienausflug.info Award 2024” for its children and family offerings, thus reaching second place in Saxony. The cathedral tours are tailored to the needs of families, and children have free entry to all cathedral music concerts.
The joy of this award can also be felt by the cathedral guide Walfriede Hartmann, who emphasizes that this recognition serves as motivation to further develop the offering. New to the program are the benefit concert for the new organ and interactive tours that are particularly tailored to young visitors. The “Flashlight Concert” measure also remains a highlight in the annual program.
This shows once again that Meißen Cathedral is not only a place of faith, but also a living part of the community that combines tradition and modernity.
