Summer festival in Meißen: A festival for the whole city!

Last weekend the annual summer festival took place in Meißen, which was organized by the city and the Meißen municipal utilities. The festival, which took place on the construction site on Jasperstrasse, attracted a large number of guests who were looking forward to a colorful program. Mayor Olaf Raschke warmly welcomed all visitors and reported, among other things, on the current status of tram number 14, which is currently being restored in Dresden. Raschke emphasized the importance of the tram depot, which contains exhibits from the “Initiative Saxon Railway History e.V.” and announced that it was his last summer festival in the role of host.

A highlight of the festival was the proceeds from the sale of drinks, which benefited the association that supports the transport museum. Mayor Markus Renner also awarded the city of Meißen's honorary award to five committed citizens who have distinguished themselves through their voluntary work. This underlines the importance of volunteering in the city, especially in times when flexible help, such as in disaster relief, is increasingly required.

Dedicated projects and creative stands

Nine local associations had the opportunity to contribute their ideas to the Meißener Stadtwerke project voting. The winners, who each received 1500 euros, include:

  • Dachverband der Hahnemannstätten e.V. – Verdunkelungsrollos
  • Reha-, Fitness- und Gesundheitssportverein „Aktion Gesundheit Meißen“ – neuer Gerätetrainingsbereich
  • SV Fortschritt Meißen-West 1990 e.V. – Spielplatz für Kinder
  • „Zaschendorf – Das Dorf in der Stadt e.V.“ – Bücherzelle, Liegebank, historische Fotos

The offer at the festival was varied: a stand from the Algenwerk Dresden had algae ice cream on offer, which was very well received by the guests. A visit to a new selfie point was also announced, which will soon be set up on the market with the colorful “Meissen” lettering.

Another celebration for the community

The value of volunteer work cannot be overestimated, especially in light of the increased need due to climate-related extreme weather events. According to a current study by the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief, over 1.76 million people in Germany are active in civil defense and disaster protection. The commitment rate here is around three percent of the population, which shows how important it is to attract more people to volunteer work.

Overall, these festivities and initiatives not only offer an excellent opportunity to meet, but also strengthen the feeling of togetherness in Meißen. A big thank you goes to all the organizers, supporters and volunteers who help make such events possible.
