Thomas de Maizière: This is how the state becomes capable of acting again!
On Monday evening there was an exciting event organized by the CDU district association in the church building in Meißen. Under the motto “State reform and political responsibility – perspectives for the CDU in times of change,” almost 70 guests came together to discuss pressing questions about the political future. Chairwoman Bianca Wunderwald highlighted the importance of the 80-year-old CDU and emphasized the need to deal intensively with the political mandate.
The focus of the discussion was the former Federal Minister Dr. Thomas de Maiziere. As chairman of the expert commission on state reform, he presented the initiative, which aims to restore the state's ability to act. According to diesachsen.de, an interim report was published in March containing 30 concrete suggestions. Fortunately, 60 percent of these proposals have already been included in the current government's coalition agreement.
Important reform proposals
De Maizière explained that the proposals are not only aimed at making legislation more transparent and innovation-friendly. A particularly central point is the strengthening of education through a national education council. The topics of local politics, European regulations and demographic challenges were also discussed in detail during the event. De Maizière expressed optimism about the viability of the reforms and encouraged those present to find pragmatic solutions.
The discussion about the state's ability to act is more current than ever: According to a survey by the German Civil Service Association from 2024, almost 70% of citizens believe that the state is overwhelmed by its tasks. Trust in state institutions has reached an all-time low. This was also emphasized by De Maizière in an interview in which he described the current state situation as “no longer capable of taking action” (sueddeutsche.de).
A broad alliance for change
In order to counteract the loss of trust, the “Initiative for an Effective State” was founded. In addition to De Maizière, prominent faces such as Peer Steinbrück, Andreas Voßkuhle and Julia Jäkel are also among the initiators of this important initiative. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier acts as patron of the movement (hertie-school.org). Structural-relevant reforms for the public sector are being sought here. The final report of this initiative is planned for summer 2025 and will include statements from various social groups.
Superintendent i. R. Andreas Stempel concluded the event in Meißen with thanks for the “plea for pragmatism” and underlined the need to actively shape change. These words reflect the challenge we face in the current political landscape.
It remains exciting to see how the proposals for state reform are implemented in practice and whether they can actually restore the desired trust in the ability of state institutions to act.
