Electoral forum in Meißen: Who will be the new mayor?
The election campaign is in full swing in the picturesque city of Meißen, known for its impressive old town and world-famous porcelain factory. On August 28, 2025, the Sächsische Zeitung invites you to an election forum in the historic town hall, where citizens have the opportunity to get to know the three candidates for mayor. The newspaper reports that the incumbent Olaf Raschke, who has been at the helm for three terms, will not stand for re-election.
The applicants for the successor are an exciting trio: Markus Renner, current mayor and responsible for the financial budget, Martin Bahrmann from the FDP, who already ran in 2018, and René Jurisch from the AfD, who achieved the best results among the individual applicants in the city council election in June 2024. The evening is intended to give citizens answers to central topics: the political orientation of the candidates, their plans for Meißen and the course for the city's 1,100th anniversary in 2029.
Advance registration required
Anyone who would like to take part in the election forum must register in advance. The event is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and candidates are expected to present their visionary ideas and concepts that will shape the future of Meissen.
But this event is not the only opportunity to address community issues. The Körber Foundation is organizing an exciting program as part of the Democracy Forum on the same day, which begins with registration at 12:30 p.m. From 1:30 p.m. there will be a welcoming speech, followed by a keynote speech by Peter Kurz, which is dedicated to the role of municipalities as important places of action in democracy.
Diverse discussions
Several panels are planned that will address the challenges and opportunities for cities and communities. A central topic will be the discussion about the need for open spaces for municipalities in order to be able to react flexibly to local challenges. The roundtable discussions also deal with the protection of local politicians, an increasingly pressing issue these days.
In addition, there will be workshops on various aspects such as the compatibility of family, career and volunteer work, which are important for many elected officials. The day will end with a shared dinner, which not only promotes exchange among participants, but also creates a feeling of community.
The citizens of Meißen thus have the opportunity to actively participate in political events and to obtain comprehensive information. Right now, when decisions are being made for the future of the city, commitment and participation are needed more than ever. Further information about the mayoral election and the candidates can also be found on the city's official website. There are more details here.
