Freiberg badminton star Michael Prinz: Off to Thailand for the World Cup!
What an exciting time for badminton enthusiasts! Today, September 2, 2025, Michael Prinz from ATSV Freiberg will be on the field at the Senior World Championship in Pattaya, Thailand. The competitions begin next Sunday and attract participants from all over the world who want to compete in various age categories.
Overall, these are the fourth world title fights for the experienced badminton player, whose participation was uncertain for a long time. But now it is certain that he will set off on the almost 10,000 kilometer journey, which will take around 20 hours. The event, organized by the Badminton World Federation (BWF), is aimed at players aged 35 and over and will be held at the Eastern National Sports Training Centre. Pattaya was selected following a bidding process after Auckland withdrew in June 2024.
Competitions and formats
The 2025 BWF World Senior Championships will feature numerous categories, including men's and women's singles and doubles events, as well as mixed doubles. The age groups range from 35 to over 80 years. Here is an overview of the competition formats and conditions of participation:
- Männer Einzel (MS)
- Frauen Einzel (WS)
- Männer Doppel (MD)
- Frauen Doppel (WD)
- Mixed Doppel (XD)
A maximum of four participants per association may compete in the singles competitions and eight in the doubles competitions. The tournament structure provides for a knockout format if more than 16 players participate in each category. Otherwise the game is played in league format.
The return of the legends
This year's championships will also be enriched by the comeback of Indonesian player Hendra Setiawan. The four-time world and Olympic champion will compete in two categories: men's doubles with Tony Gunawan and mixed doubles with Debby Susanto. Setiawan's return promises exciting matches as he is one of the founders of the modern era of badminton.
Those interested can follow the results and draw of the tournament on the event's official website, while the competitions will take place between September 7th and 14th. The first games start on September 7th at 9 a.m. Thai time. The finals are scheduled for September 14th at 11 a.m.
The BWF World Senior Championships were launched in 2003 and take place every two years. Players crowned as “World Senior Champions” can look forward to gold medals, although there is no prize money for the participants. The first venues were in Sofia, Bulgaria, and the most popular athletes had the chance to defend their title or win a new one every two years. The next big challenge for our Freiberg athletes is now upon us!
We wish Michael Prinz and all participants good luck and a fair tournament! Everyone can watch the exciting competition next month and look forward to the big moments that this championship brings.
