Carriage accident near Sayda: Peta calls for a ban on horse-drawn carriages!

On Monday evening there was a tragic carriage accident near Sayda in the Ore Mountains, in which a horse lost its life and five people were injured. The incident occurred on the S 212 when a car collided head-on with a trailer while overtaking. Such incidents are also a recurring problem in other federal states. The animal rights organization Peta is now calling for a comprehensive ban on horse-drawn carriages in Central Saxony in order to protect both animals and people. This is reported by the Free press.

This demand from Peta is supported by alarming statistics: There have been numerous accidents involving carriages in Germany in recent years. Last year alone, over 30 carriage accidents were recorded, in which not only people but also many horses were injured. In a particularly serious case, a carriage collided with a car in Gronau, resulting in several injuries. According to Peta, the most common cause of accidents is sudden frightening of horses, which leads to uncontrollable situations.

Calls for a ban

PETA argues that it is not just about the safety of passengers. The organization also points out that horse-drawn carriages are often inadequately equipped: a lack of safety devices such as belts and airbags as well as inadequate lighting and braking systems contribute to the danger. The case of a carriage horse in Saxony-Anhalt that was hit by a regional train also illustrates the risks. In 2024, four horses lost their lives in similar accidents and at least 17 others suffered injuries, including those Horses.de reported.

In Mallorca, discussions about carriage rides are also heated. In recent months there have even been several incidents of carriage horses collapsing there. Animal rights activists, including Peta, are calling on the Balearic government to ban horse-drawn carriage rides altogether, arguing that these practices are cruel to animals. Finally, carriage horses are often used in extreme temperatures, which can lead to serious incidents. As early as July 2022, the Palma city council planned to ban carriage rides from 2024, but so far these measures have not been implemented Mallorca Magazine reported.

What's next?

The Sayda incident is therefore not just an isolated tragedy, but reflects a larger problem. The ongoing calls for a complete ban on horse-drawn carriages show that society is increasingly concerned with the dangers and suffering of the wildlife involved. Many are now wondering what will happen next and whether the responsible authorities will take action. Because one thing is clear: there is a lot to be done and the discussion about the safety of carriages will not stop.
