Roßweiner scaffolding builder: Renovation of the Lichtenberg dam started!

In the past few months, the Roßwein-based company Kommunalhardt Service GmbH has impressively demonstrated its expertise. After successfully implementing the renovation of the Lehnmühle dam five years ago, the employees are now busy with the renovation of the Lichtenberg dam in the Central Saxony district. Construction began on the dam crest in May 2024. The dam's extraction tower is now being scaffolded to enable the upcoming renovation work. Loud DNN This measure, which is estimated to cost around 30 million euros, will be financed by funds from the Free State of Saxony and will take at least two years.

In order to advance the renovation efficiently, a concrete construction road was visible, which came to light during the emptying of the reservoir. This is now used to transport over 150 tonnes of scaffolding material that has been delivered to the removal tower since work began. Particular care must be taken when constructing the scaffolding to ensure that enough space is created for other trades that are also working on the tower. With a lot of skill, the specialists install a special scaffolding that has to project three meters outwards to accommodate the tower head, while the assembly of a ten-meter-deep hanging scaffold in the inlet tulip has already begun.

Progress and challenges

The renovation of the extraction tower involves numerous technical challenges. Among other things, old coatings made of fiberglass plastic must be removed and the external steel hydraulic structure must be renewed. In addition, old dam gate valves and rods will be dismantled in order to create a flat base for sealing with plastic sealing membranes. Media service Saxony documents this progress and provides information about the latest developments on site, including the press event of the Saxony State Dam Administration on June 25, 2025.

An additional aspect that complicates work on the dam is the need for construction dewatering on the water side of the dam. For this purpose, a cofferdam and the necessary pipelines were built. These measures ensure that the construction site remains operational throughout the entire renovation phase.

Long-term significance

The Lichtenberg dam has played a central role in the region's water supply for around 50 years. It supplies around 200,000 people through the waterworks in Lichtenberg and Freiberg, and the entire infrastructure is closely linked to the Freiberg Revierwasserlaufanstalt and the Osterzgebirge dam network system. During the renovation, the raw water supply will be temporarily ensured via the Rauschenbach dam and the Obere Revierwasserlaufanstalt Freiberg, which ensures smooth operations. Water management Saxony highlights that minimizing restrictions for raw water users and residents during the construction period is one of the main objectives of this extensive work.

This shows that the community and the company have a good hand in not only investing in the region's infrastructure, but also ensuring a secure water supply for the future. With solid technology and project management, which has already been successfully proven in the past, the renovation of the Lichtenberg dam will certainly lead to a positive result in the coming years.
