Saxony swims strong: Successful JRK teams at the national competition!

A few days ago, the 17th national lifeguarding competition for the youth groups of the German Life Saving Society (DLRG) took place in Dresden. From October 24th to 26th, 2025, over 150 young lifeguards from all over Germany fought for the best places. The preparations for the event were intensive: In the weeks before the competition, many participants even scheduled their training times during their vacation.

The journey to this exciting event turned out to be a real community experience for three Saxon teams from Freital and the surrounding area of Chemnitz. On Saturday morning things really got down to business: the different age groups presented their skills. The youngest, in age group 1 (AK 1, 8-10 years), competed in the Prohlis swimming pool, while the older young people in AK 2 (11-13 years) demonstrated their skills on the first aid course in the DRK center.

Diverse competitions and team spirit

The third age group (AK 3, 14-16 years), on the other hand, was able to compete at creative team stations and in an exciting three-way battle that included swimming, first aid and Red Cross knowledge. The atmosphere in the swimming pool was electric and the cheers echoed. The Chemnitz surrounding area team in AK 3 in particular showed strong performances and had the spectators excited.

A highlight of the competition was the first aid portion, where participants had to apply their knowledge in realistic scenarios such as sunstroke, open wounds and cardiac arrest. Tasks about the history of the JRK and creative challenges were also part of the program and tested the versatility of the young lifeguards.

Results and outlook

The results were pleasing: In age group 1, a mixed team from Freital and the Chemnitz area secured third place. The Freital boys and girls from AK 2 also ended up in 3rd place, and the AK 3 from the Chemnitz area finished with a strong 4th place. After three days full of excitement and team spirit, we finally started the return journey, tired but with a feeling of community and courage.

But that's just the beginning! There are still many exciting competitions coming up in rescue sports. National teams compete in world championships every two years, while European championships take place every two years in between. The DLRG youth also regularly takes part in Junior European Championships to promote the next generation of lifesavers. In addition, DLRG athletes take part in military world championships as Bundeswehr sports soldiers and train at the Bundeswehr sports school in Warendorf.

These competitions not only show the sporting side of lifesaving, but also the irreplaceable team spirit and commitment of young people. Ultimately, this solidarity makes a decisive contribution to ensuring that the values of the DLRG and rescue sports remain so alive.
