A serious traffic accident occurred yesterday afternoon around 4 p.m. on the B173 between Freiberg and Halsbach. A 50-year-old VW driver had to stop due to traffic when a 21-year-old Skoda driver overlooked her and tried to avoid him. As a result, she collided with a truck driving in oncoming traffic and driven by a 63-year-old driver. The young woman was seriously injured in the collision and had to be freed from her vehicle by the Freiberg fire department. A rescue helicopter took her to hospital with serious injuries. Fortunately, the VW driver and the truck driver were uninjured, but the federal highway is currently completely closed due to the clean-up work. This is what Blick.de reports.
Accidents on the B173 seem to be anything but rare. A similar incident occurred on February 28, 2025 in Haidt. There was a crash between three vehicles at around 12:23 p.m.: an Opel van, a BMW Mini and a Peugeot. Here, too, the van had to brake due to traffic, whereupon the BMW driver tried to avoid it and still collided with the van. This then crashed into the Peugeot in oncoming traffic. Although the driver of the BMW Mini only suffered minor injuries, the occupants of the Peugeot - a 61-year-old woman and a 58-year-old man - were seriously injured and they also had to be taken to hospital by rescue helicopter. The accident investigation led to the road being closed and the material damage is estimated at around 45,000 euros. The situation shows that traffic on this route can often be chaotic, as the Frankenpost reports.
