New train connections: Fast and comfortable to Poland and Copenhagen!
The rail connections between Germany and Poland are waiting for an exciting innovation: from December 2025, the long-distance transport offering will be drastically increased! How l-iz.de Reportedly, Deutsche Bahn (DB) and the Polish PKP Intercity will increase the number of direct connections by over 50% - from the previous 11 to 17 train connections daily. The result will be faster and more comfortable travel between the two countries, which will be attractive to both tourists and business travelers.
A highlight is the new connection from Leipzig via Wroclaw to Krakow. This is carried out using modernized PKP Eurocity coaches, with the journey time from Leipzig to Wroclaw being around three and a half hours. The trains start in Leipzig at 10:55 a.m. and 2:55 p.m. and reach Wroclaw after over three hours. From there the journey continues to Krakow, where the passengers arrive in Leipzig around seven hours after departure. How mdr.de notes, this connection is a successful response to the increased demand for travel between Germany and Poland.
New connections – fast and flexible
With the introduction of a fourth pair of trains every two hours between Berlin and Warsaw, the capital will also be better connected to its Polish neighbors. As a result, passengers from cities such as Munich, Nuremberg or Frankfurt (Main) benefit from a shortened travel time of around two hours. This transfer time in Leipzig makes traveling much more comfortable.
In addition, a direct connection to Copenhagen will be put into operation from May 1, 2026 in cooperation with the Czech railway ČD and the Danish DSB. With a travel time of just under nine hours between Dresden and Copenhagen, the new ComfortJets are used for this purpose. These connections complement the existing route from Prague via Dresden, Berlin and Hamburg to Copenhagen and are likely to be particularly popular in the summer months with nightly trains between Copenhagen and Prague.
A look at the numbers
The demand for rail transport can be seen not least in the current passenger numbers. In 2023, 429 billion passenger kilometers were traveled across the EU, the highest figure since 2004. This shows the ever-growing popularity of rail travel, particularly in Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Poland, according to data from destatis.de prove. Rail traffic increased by 9.4% between 2015 and 2019, and compared to the Corona years, the number of passengers has almost doubled.
The upcoming expansion of long-distance transport offers not only represents a convenient advantage for travelers, but is also a sign of the increased attractiveness of rail transport in Europe. While Deutsche Bahn is planning further routes and optimizing existing connections, it remains to be hoped that the positive trends will continue.
