New documentation center in Borna: A milestone for Saxony!

Borna, a charming town near Leipzig, will soon become the setting for an important project: a new documentation center for the regional and economic history of Saxony will soon be built here. This center, scheduled for completion by the end of 2025, guarantees an exciting addition to the region's cultural and archival offerings. The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for May 27, 2024, and the move of the Saxon Economic Archives (SWA) is scheduled for spring 2026, as Ahoi Leipzig reports.

The documentation center will not only have a three-story archive building, but will also house the district archive of the Leipzig district, the Saxon Economic Archive and DOKMitt e.V. It will be a modern building with air conditioning to ensure optimal conditions for the archive holdings and with an educational offering that will form a shared campus with the district's adult education center. This is a big step for Borna and will help better preserve the region's historical heritage and make it accessible to a wider public.

Financing and importance of the project

An important aspect of the project is financing: The Leipzig district has received a funding decision for 16.5 million euros, which comes from funds from the Coal Regions Investment Act and the Free State of Saxony. This represents a significant financial contribution to the preparation of the property and the outdoor facilities. State Minister Thomas Schmidt emphasizes the important role of archiving for the public and research, while District Administrator Henry Graichen sees this funding approval as a milestone for the construction of the center, as also confirmed by Sachsen.de.

The historians at DOKMitt e.V., which has been working on the realization of such a center for ten years now, have set themselves the goal of comprehensively documenting the industrial and cultural landscape of the Central German Revier. The association is already publishing free brochures on its homepage that present the results of projects and current plans. In this way, awareness of the region's historical roots will continue to be heightened in the future.

An attractive location

Borna was deliberately chosen as a location thanks to its excellent logistical connections, both via the S-Bahn and the motorway. This ideal location ensures that the documentation center is easily accessible for interested visitors and researchers. A parking lot with an electric car charging station is also planned, which meets the modern requirements of the facility.

The anticipation for the coming year is already palpable, because in 2024 Borna will celebrate its proud 775th anniversary. For this occasion, the SWA and DOKMitt e.V. are planning joint projects and events to celebrate the importance of the region and at the same time put the new documentation center in the spotlight. In the first half of 2026, the Saxon Economic Archives will move to the south of Leipzig, where the new premises will find a good home.

Overall, the documentation center promises not only the preservation of cultural heritage, but also a place of learning and meeting for everyone interested in regional history. A real benefit for Borna and the entire Saxony region, as SWA Leipzig underlines. An attractive place is being created here that keeps the economic history and cultural heritage of the region alive and prepares it for various target groups.
