The conversion of the former paper factory in Schkeuditz into a modern residential area is causing mixed feelings among both new tenants and project managers. But while 65 of the 139 new apartments in the Wehlitz district are already rented, tenants appear unsettled and dissatisfied.

A tenant describes that he was confronted with serious problems when moving in on October 1st. The lack of an elevator and front door are just some of the construction sites that immediately caught his eye. The property management is also a long time coming - both the inadequate delivery of mailboxes and the lack of a bell have not yet been resolved after several complaints. These deficiencies are not only annoying, they also cause delays and frustration among residents.

Construction sites and their consequences

The cause of the problems is, among other things, parallel construction sites. Last but not least, the waterworks are active in the city and make access to the new apartments considerably more difficult. The situation is tense because water was also observed entering the underground car park and the basement area, which is related to the settlement of the new building. However, residents of the historic parts of the paper mill report that they are not affected by any of these difficulties.

Those responsible for the project emphasize that the problems raised only affect a few apartments and are doing everything they can to take the complaints seriously and find solutions. At a time when the housing shortage in Germany is becoming increasingly noticeable, especially in large cities, the construction project in Schkeuditz symbolizes the challenges of the current housing market. The traffic light coalition has set itself the goal of creating around 400,000 new apartments every year. But as the latest statistics show, construction volumes in 2024 fell by 14 percent compared to the previous year, calling into question the achievement of these goals.
