Arson shock in Schkeuditz: Ex-firefighter in court!
In Schkeuditz, a frightening series of fires is causing increasing alarm and concern among residents. Since June 2023, the focus has been on various buildings, arbors and vehicles that keep burning. The police have now identified a person primarily responsible: Kevin P., a 35-year-old ex-firefighter who has been charged in the Leipzig regional court since the end of May. He is accused of setting a total of twelve fires between July and November 2024, which caused a stir among the volunteer fire department and the investigative authorities. As [lvz.de] reports, the police had already kept an eye on Kevin P. a few weeks before his arrest and his daily movements were monitored in order to collect evidence of the arson.
The trial against Kevin P. is now in full swing. On the fifth day of the trial, several officers from the operational management group of the criminal police were heard as witnesses. Interestingly, Kevin P. was almost caught red-handed on November 29, 2024, when a VW Polo burst into flames on the corner of Mühlstrasse and Mühlberg. The police chased him in a civilian vehicle, but were only able to catch him after he fled. In the second major incident, which took place on November 17th on Bahnhofsstrasse, Kevin P. was suspected of having been in the area with a suspected affair despite his observed encounters.
In revenge for being kicked out?
Investigators suspect that Kevin P. acted out of revenge for his expulsion from the fire department, which was allegedly for disciplinary reasons. According to reports, the large fire that set a gazebo in the “Unity” allotment on fire on July 16, 2023 was the start of a chain of ignitions. In the following months, numerous gazebos, empty buildings and even a barn burned down. The wheat field was severely affected by 180 burning bales of hay. In total, at least 15 fires are attributed to Kevin P., which makes the extent of his actions all the more alarming, as [tag24.de] also states.
Recently, the investigation caused a stir as the fire brigade continued to be frequently deployed and the series of fires kept the city in suspense. The police plan to interview more witnesses on June 25th and 26th, and a total of seven trial days are scheduled until mid-August, which could shed further light on the case and its facets. Kevin P. has not yet commented on the serious allegations and therefore remains unresolved.
Arson in focus
Government agencies have recorded a notable increase in arson cases in recent years. According to statistics from the Federal Criminal Police Office, numerous cases were recorded between 2014 and 2024 that indicate these dangerous acts. The eerie trend extends across various cities and has worried citizens who are no longer safe in their residential areas (Statista). These developments contrast with the efforts of the fire brigade and police, who always strive to ensure safety and order.
The coming days of the trial will show whether there will be further clarification in this shocking case and how the justice system will react to such serious allegations.
