In an extensive forest fire, Claudia Ressl, group leader of the fire brigade, fought against the flames alongside seven other comrades. She lives with her husband Thomas and the seven -month -old son Franzl in Dautzschen at Beilrode. The two parents often decide spontaneously who is moving out in an assignment, but with such a fire, every hectare counts.

The Dautzsche fire brigade was alerted on Sunday at 9 p.m. after other weirs had been in use since 2 p.m. The fire site extended over almost 20 hectares of forest, and the challenge for the emergency services was enormous because the 2000-liter water tank of her vehicle was quickly emptied. That meant an intensive back and forth to the nearest water source.

As a member of the active member since 2014, she also has operations during her parental leave. Her commitment extends beyond the volunteer fire brigade: since 2022 she has been a fire champion at the Bundeswehr fire brigade in Schönewalde and was even stationed in Africa for three and a half months. With a view to the future, Claudia is pleased that her son Franzl can also enter the children's and youth fire brigade in eight years.

The fight against forest fires requires special training and equipment, which also include the latest techniques in the vegetation fire fighting. As Fire Brigade Sterzhausen notes, these training courses are becoming increasingly important. The importance of forest fire fighting has changed and is often put to the test by the changing climate. The Dautzian fire brigade is also well prepared and relies on modern aids in the fight against the flames.

Such missions show how important it is to act quickly and efficiently - a principle that Claudia Ressl and her team are committed to.

After a long night, in which they were in use until around 6 a.m., Claudia and her comrades were finally allowed to move away - at home, her smiling baby Franzl was already waiting for her. This once again illustrates the willingness to sacrifice and the tireless commitment that the members of the volunteer fire brigade provide in difficult times to protect nature and the people around them.
