Cultural bastion Torgau in need: appeal for donations for the future!
In Torgau, the cultural bastion is facing major financial challenges. The supporting association Cultural Action Project (KAP) has launched a call for donations via social media to secure the necessary funds. Conny Stöber, a long-time supporter of the KAP, is concerned about the current situation. Managing director Daniela Voigt explains that the financial problems have existed since the cultural bastion opened on October 2, 2005. “The general cost increases have brought us into this situation,” says Voigt, who emphasizes that the call for donations is not related to the personality of the former managing director Uwe Narkunat.
The donation goal is 15,000 euros to ensure business operations over the turn of the year. One reason for the financial difficulties is also repayments of government Corona aid and a lack of income from open-air events that failed due to bad weather. The KAP's statutes suggest that there are no plans to close the cultural bastion, and there are no legal difficulties involved. Nevertheless, Voigt is committed to optimizing expenses and putting the cultural bastion's offerings to the test. To compensate for the additional costs, ticket prices for cinema films were increased by an average of 50 cents.
A look into the structures
The cultural bastion currently employs six part-time employees and twelve mini-jobbers. Particularly worrying is the open children's and youth club "kap.uze", which no longer has any regular offerings since the director of the facility left. In order to collect the necessary funds, a donation account was set up: Cultural Action Project Torgau e.V., IBAN: DE57 8605 5592 2210 0180 83, intended purpose: “Preserve Kulturbastion”.
Mayor Henrik Simon has assured his support and is in contact with the board of the cultural bastion. Given that many cultural workers in Germany have been facing similar problems since the pandemic, it is important to emphasize that in the cultural sector, as kulturstaatsminister.de reports, access to short-time work benefits and other federal support measures remain low.
The cultural policy situation shows how important it is to support cultural institutions in order to maintain the diverse offerings in cities like Torgau. But without support from the population, it will be difficult to free the cultural bastion from this financial dilemma and maintain the square as an important cultural focal point.
