Saxony is struggling with a flood of waste: over 5.7 million tons disposed of!
In 2023, waste disposal facilities in Saxony provided lively numbers. Over 5.7 million tons of waste were brought into the facilities, which impressively demonstrates the manpower of these facilities. According to that Recycling portal Hazardous waste accounts for 21 percent of this huge amount of waste. In particular, a good 3.4 million tons came from Saxony itself, i.e. almost 60 percent of the total amount. The rest was also not insignificant: 32 percent came from other federal states, while 6 percent were delivered from abroad.
The distribution of waste types is as interesting as it is complex. A significant portion, around 35 percent, or two million tons, comes from waste and wastewater treatment plants as well as water treatment. Construction and demolition waste accounted for an additional 20 percent, which corresponds to approximately 1.1 million tons.
Valuable raw materials in circulation
However, the Saxon waste disposal facilities not only provide a service, they also actively contribute to the economic cycle. In total, around 3.8 million tonnes of substances were released in 2023 BVSE reported. Over 1.5 million tons of these were products or secondary raw materials that were reintegrated into the cycle. This is a clear plus for the environment and a wise decision for the use of resources.
There were around 2 million tons available for further recycling, a very considerable amount. Of these, 872,000 tons were made available for energy use, while 414,000 tons were even used for recycling. This shows that recycling is not just a buzzword, but is actively practiced in Saxony.
A look at waste management in Germany
The annual waste balance for Germany, as shown Destatis finding underlines the urgency and importance of sustainable waste management. In particular, the emergence of plastic waste creates challenges that need to be overcome. The data on plastic waste can be found under “mixed packaging/recyclables”, whereas plastics collected separately are assigned to relevant key numbers.
Overall, it can be said that Saxony is on the right track with its waste management. Due to the strong return into the economic cycle and recycling, there is a positive outlook for the coming years. So there really is something to be done when it comes to improving waste management - not just in Saxony, but throughout Germany!
